Kay Kay was a Long Beach resident before he was deported to Cambodia in 2004

China was a Long Beach resident before she was deported to Cambodia in 2004

Between 1975 and 1994 about 160,000 Cambodians came to the United States seeking asylum. Long Beach is home to the largest resettlement of Cambodian refugees. They were resettled in high-poverty areas that were under-resourced and heavily policed because of the “tough on crime” era. China and Kay Kay are examples of the many who faced deportation over minor offenses. They unknowingly accepted unfair plea deals that triggered their deportation which are currently decades-old convictions that affect them to this day. Both Kay Kay and China live in Cambodia where access to resources is limited and need mutual aid so they can stay safe in Cambodia during this pandemic! The Long Beach Southeast Asian Anti-Deportation Collective is committed to advocating for their right to return to this country, but in the meantime it is imperative we ensure their survival overseas.

After being separated from their friends and family here in the U.S., they are even more isolated during this pandemic. Kay Kay and China rely on support from their families here in the United States, but their families are experiencing financial hardships unquestionably due to the pandemic. With your contributions and aid, Kay Kay and China will have more funds to stay healthy and safe during this pandemic. Your donations will go to those affected by inhumane deportation laws and folks directly impacted by this system. Kay Kay will be able to run his nonprofit “Tiny Toones” and serve the youth in his community. China will be able to support herself with her medical needs and work on her dreams of opening a bakery.

Our community has been neglected by the government, but strength resides in our ability to take care of each other despite the many setbacks our folks have faced. Facing war, genocide, refugee camps, poverty, gang violence, incarceration, and deportation, our community is resilient. We look out for each other and will bring KayKay and China home.

Our goal is to raise $5000 each which totals $10,000 for both Kay Kay and China!
