Making Patients More Comfortable

Spende geschützt
In December 2014, I was diagnosed with stage IIB Hodgkins Lymphoma. It was the beginning of a long battle, that I am still fighting. The hardest aspect of it all was that I could not be treated in my home town, which meant for a minimum of six months I would have to leave my family, my friends, my business and my life in general and move to St. John's, NL to be treated at the Health Science Center.
Once I arrived in St. John's for treatment I was a little confused that I would not be treated at the cancer center but instead the ambulatory unit. The reason for this being that Hodgkins Lymphoma (as well as Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and Leukemia) is a blood disease. A cancer of the blood. I was also shocked to hear that the canadian cancer society only gives a small portion of it's donations to the ambulatory unit. Even though people with HL, NHL and Leukemia are being treated there, they are not receiving all the benefits from donations made to the cancer society.
As I receive my treatment, I look around at all of the things inside the unit. Comfortable beds, fan's at each bed, warm blankets straight out of the blanket warmer and beautiful pictures on the walls. When I look a little closer, I notice something else. Gold or silver metal tags with heading's such as... donated by or in memory. This is where I start to think. Although the ambulatory unit doesn't see much of the donations from the Cancer society, it does from it's patients. Whether it be former patients or the families of some passed on, big or small, they have all left their mark in the unit in some way.
Why have they made donations? Well, if they feel like I do, they too have noticed how wonderful the staff are. How when you recieve your treatment they go above and beyond to make you comfortable. How they call you by your first name even though they have hundreds of patients and how even though you may be feeling like the world has done you wrong, you have been robbed of time and you are thousands of miles from home, you can always count on one thing. A unit of amazing staff, kind and understanding fellow patients, a comfortable bed, and a warm blanket.
Please help me repay this unit somehow, whether it be t.v's at each bed, wifi for portable devices or a coffee and tea station. Please help me make the unit a little more comfortable for the staff and patients. Please help me leave my mark in the unit that was so kind to me when I needed it the most.
