There is no other place like Sagan Kotturan CHamoru on Guåhan.
If you have been there, you know.
If you have not, you can imagine and still know.
It is a co-operative space that since 2006, is dedicated to preserving, perpetuating and promoting the CHamoru culture, language and history through the education, exhibition, apprenticeship, and demonstration of the various forms of traditional and contemporary CHamoru arts and crafts.
Perched atop Ipao Point overlooking Tumon Bay, our open-air CHamoru Cultural Center that many CHamoru artisans, cultural practitioners and traditional healers call home, was hit hard by relentless typhoon Mawar.
The Cultural Center is in immediate need of financial assistance for restoring the grounds to a functional gathering and healing space for our community.
Contributions will go towards restoration of the guma’ (houses) that were badly damaged by typhoon Mawar and its aftermath including:
- Repairing broken water pipes
- Mitigating extensive water damage to structures
- Repairing glass windows
- Removing and breaking down toppled trees and foliage on the property
- Repairing damages caused by thefts at several of the houses
- Renting waste removal equipment and manpower
- Paying for costs associated with disposing irreplaceable and destroyed items
