Help the Museum Printing House (Museumdrukkerij) in Grootegast restore a unique Cossar newspaper press

In New Zealand, an impressive newspaper press—a Cossar press dating back to the last century—was left to gather dust. Manufactured by Thomas Cossar (Payne & Sons) in Otley, Yorkshire, England, this is a truly unique machine; only a few examples remain in the world. In its day, this iconic press provided countless people with news and information.

The museum has successfully transported the Cossar press from New Zealand to the Netherlands. Now, however, the machine must be installed and restored—a major undertaking that is both labor-intensive and costly.

Preserving and showcasing a unique piece of history:

The technology behind these newspaper presses was revolutionary for its time, enabling newspapers to be printed much faster and in significantly larger quantities. Such machines were used for letterpress newspaper printing well into the 1970s. Yet, with the advent of new techniques—such as offset printing—and the rise of digitalization, many of these machines were dismantled and sold as scrap metal.

The Museum Printing House in Grootegast is adding this immense press to its collection, which chronicles the history of the printing craft. Printed media plays a vital role in our democracy, from safeguarding freedom of the press to fostering civic engagement. While this theme is explored in other graphic arts museums, the Cossar press will serve as a centerpiece here, being one of the few remaining functional presses of this scale and quality. The story of the newspaper industry touches upon journalism, the formation of public opinion, and the broader scope of news reporting.

We hope you will support our project—we would be very grateful for your donation!
