Respite for Sarah the Carer from her Difficult Life
Sarah, my daughter, acquired a brain injury in a car accident on a surfing trip to Yorke Peninsula S.A. with friends in 1987.
Sarah is 46 now with two children and has never had a holiday without them or family let alone overseas. The major impact on her life has been to make her socially vulnerable. This has led to personal and financial difficulties. Sarah’s uninhibited personality and innate love of people has made her an enthusiastic disability and aged-care worker, giving every day to people worse off than herself , leading to her being dubbed ‘Sarah the Carer’. The pay is low, it doesn’t provide any sick or holiday leave, or even pay for travel time. Last year Sarah was getting ahead of the financial battle when a loved patient died. After grieving with her family another patient died and she is facing the black hole this leaves in her income. Through all of this Sarah has maintained her terrific sense of humour and love of her work but she badly needs respite from this difficult life.
Sarah was excited last year, her friend Lois asked her to be her ‘Plus1” at her brothers wedding in Vanuatu for five days in July. This looked possible at the end of last year but now it’s not. We want to raise $1,700 to cover airfares, passport costs, accommodation, and daily costs of food and transport including $500 towards lost wages for the week she is away. Parents have already donated fares and passport costs.
