Replacement trees for Singleton Park
Some older trees in Singleton Park are dying!
Help us to replace trees in Singleton Park. You may know recently a magnificent old beech tree in the park had to be felled due to heartwood fungus, which led to to public safety concerns. This is distressing, but such losses are inevitable, the only solution is to replace trees for the future; a woodland cannot stand still, there is a natural cycle of loss and replacement. There has been some recent planting even during lockdown, but the council will struggle to purchase as many trees as desired; our project is be to raise funds for the purchase of 4 trees.
The planting of trees especially in urban areas is beneficial to the environment and useful to mitigate against climate changes, acting as a carbon sink.
As this is a recent loss, now is a good time to consider purchasing some replacements. The siting of the trees will be guided by Martin Bignell, Team Leader Tree Services for Swansea Council, to optimise growth and success. Later in the autumn is the best time to plant while the tres are dormant to, so we are running a campaign until the end of September to raise some funds .The choice of trees will be UK native species, they will be about 3 m tall at purchase and will be sourced from the UK to avoid importing untoward diseases. An individual tree costs in the region of £230, this includes the cost of purchase, planting and watering for 2 years as well as the costs of stakes and ties.
The continued development of Singleton Park will nurture the green lungs of the city and will provide enjoyment, shade and beauty in the park for residents and visitors of all ages.We would be grateful for your support and interest in this project, once the trees are planted we post updates on our fb page with photos of the trees changing through the seasons.
