The situation for refugees in Greece remains extremely unstable. European borders remain closed, despite pleas from both Greece and Italy for help with a record influx of refugees. The fact is, refugees in Greece and Italy have nowhere to go.
Refugees are facing a horrific slew of issues: poor sanitary conditions including cockroach and rat-infested camps, poor access to decent food and clean water, poor access to medical and legal assistance, and increasingly abusive treatment by authorities and locals. 10,000 children who were travelling alone have gone missing, and nobody is investigating what’s happening to them. Activists warn that refugee children are being targeted for human trafficking, prostitution, and slave labour for criminal networks.
Canadians, I'm asking for your help. I'm asking for donations to help the hundreds of refugees stranded in these conditions in Greece. Funding is drying up and NGOs are pulling out of islands like Chios , despite the situation being at breaking point. The smaller organizations that remain and the independent volunteers who fill the gaps need help urgently - as do refugees who have been granted asylum, but have only 3-6 months to find employment before being cut off from help. But how can someone who doesn't speak Greek find a job in 6 months when Greek people themselves are desperate for employment ? The jobs aren't there. Refugees face homelessness and poverty even after thinking the nightmare of life in a camp was over.
I’m fundraising for critical humanitarian aid and basic essentials. It is more cost-effective to purchase basic necessities in bulk in Greece, and I would greatly appreciate your help in supplying some of the following items as I head back to Greece in August:
- Underwear
- Shoes/sandals
- Tights/tank tops
- Hats and sunscreen
- Deodorant and shampoo
- Razors and feminine hygiene items
- Supplies for babies/toddlers/young children
- Educational items and supplies
In addition, some of the money is used for phone credit top-ups, special medical needs, travel costs to help refugees get to legal and medical appointments, and emergency shelter when refugees find themselves homeless, which unfortunately happens frequently on the mainland as camps are full and space is scarce. *100% of the funds raised go directly to refugees.*
I would deeply appreciate your help in sharing this fundraiser to your networks so that we can help as many people as possible. $10 or $20 from each of us adds up, and can go a long way for many people living in hellish conditions.
