Refugees &Immigrants Make Gear Against COVID &Fire

My name is Ming-Ming Tung-Edelman. I am Seattle-based founder of Refugee Artisan Initiative (registered under MiMi Globe Goods) and a part-time clinical pharmacist with direct patient contact.  My state, Washington, is one of the hardest hit areas in the nation by COVID-19. The high demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) has created a severe shortage for PPE here, and across the world. While our government is trying to ramp up production of PPE, we need to act now to ensure caregivers and health care providers, myself included, on the front line against COVID-19 are protected so we can safely care for patients.

Refugee Artisan Initiative (RAI)  is in a perfect position to fulfill this urgent need. Our mission is to transform the lives of refugee and immigrant women by providing sustainable work in sewing and handcrafting goods.

To tackle this unprecedented situation, RAI has teamed up with medical professionals and clinics  to design and produce, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, gowns and other protective gear to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection. The needs of the medical community are changing rapidly and we're in a good position to adapt our artisan's skill sets to serve any specific urgent need that may arise.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, RAI’s doors are closed to the public. RAI would like to continue to provide our artisans with paid sewing projects that can be completed in the safety and comfort of their homes. Our artisans are from Vietnam, Ethiopia, China, Burma and Morocco. They are  parents of young children, some single parents, and they rely on this work to earn a living and care for their families.

The opportunity to participate in helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus while providing our artisans’ opportunities for work is an ideal use of RAI artisan skills and resources to address the urgent demand for more protective gear for the public as well as for use in the medical community.
Please join me, on my first GoFundMe, in becoming part of the solution to this dire situation. Donate to as many masks as you are capable. Every contribution counts, and your donation is tax deductible. Let us all work together to combat against COVID-19 and keep our community healthy!
