Refugee Family Goes to Camp

We are professionals who serve families and individuals seeking asylum in the United States.
Like last year, we hope to raise funds to send the children of a refugee family to summer camp—Camp Twin Creeks--in West Virginia for a two-week summer session next month.
The children are three siblings—twin 8-year-old boy and girl; and their 11-year-old brother—who fled El Salvador with their mother two years ago. Their mother, along with her children, were forced to flee their homeland after a violent gang targeted the mother because of her family ties. Having witnessed the murder a family member, the gang targeted mom. The gang then accused her of snitching, eventually telling her to “leave or die.” After mom and her children fled, the gang members systematically threatened and expelled all of the mother’s immediate family members from the city where they lived.
Mom is also a domestic violence survivor. In El Salvador, she found herself in an abusive relationship with her husband, which finally ended when she secured a restraining order against him.
Having fled El Salvador, mom and her children found themselves attempting to rebuild their lives in Virginia. Since arriving in Virginia, the children are thriving. They are performing well in school, while learning to adapt quickly to a new country and culture. Their new safe, secure, and stable environment has enabled to flourish.
We are asking for your help to make the three siblings' summer one filled with positive, joyful memories that will hopefully endure well after they return from camp. Past summers for these children were marked by uncertainty and instability. Their mother is hoping that this summer, however, will be a "special summer," different from summers past.
By helping us send the children to camp, you would provide them with a much-needed reprieve from their anguish and trauma; a reprieve that would not only benefit the children, but their mother, as well.
The $3,000 we hope to raise will cover the cost of camp tuition for all three children. Camp Twin Creeks has again generously discounted the cost of attendance given the children’s extraordinary journey and circumstances. Please help us provide these children with a summer to remember.
