Reconstructing Education in Central Kenya

THE SCHOOL
Situated in the heart of Nyeri, Kenya, the Federal Academy is a small elementary school that serves up to 200 students per semester, but the means to accommodate them are scarce. Inside, the lighting is limited, the concrete floors are hole-ridden, and the walls —blank and cracked. The painting on the outside of the building is fading, the roof is unstable and corroded, and the playground is a single rusted slide. The overall learning environment is in dire need of assistance, in a low-income neighborhood where education is needed and desired.
OUR TEAM
Studio C, our philanthropy committee from the Atlanta office of EYP, (https://www.eypae.com/) has teamed with school founders, Meshack and Sophia Mbogo, to bring hope to this small facility in central Kenya. As architects, interior designers, and philanthropists, we believe that we can use our expertise to make a significant difference. Not only a difference in the quality of education that the children are receiving but also in the morale of those who work there.
OUR GOAL
Your donation will be used to transform this primary school into a strong, supportive environment, that will attract and retain students for years to come. All proceeds will be used to cover the purchasing and shipping costs of building materials and furnishings needed to renovate the school, in addition to travel expenses for our team of 25 volunteers. We will be bringing this vision to life over the course of a week in the spring or summer of 2023.
Our team seeks to do the following:
- Replace the corrugated metal roofing
- Refinish the cracked concrete floors with new epoxy flooring finishes
- Repaint all the walls.
- Install chalkboards and provide new classroom furniture, including desks, benches, bookshelves, storage cabinets, and napping cots.
- Minor exterior landscaping, along with the installation of a new playground
