Re-usable Face Masks for Key Workers

Donation protected
Re-usable Cotton Face Masks for Key Workers.

We are raising funds in order to buy materials, pay machinists and ship where we can't use volunteer drivers. The face masks will initially be donated to key workers in East London.

What We’re Doing:
There are many charities and community organisations that are in great need of protection for their staff and volunteers who are desperately trying to source face masks at the moment. These key workers may be in environments where social distancing is not possible in their day to day roles. As medical-grade PPE is being rightly prioritised for NHS staff and care workers, we want to make sure our community key workers are not being left behind.

As the British Medical Association council chair, Dr Chaand Nagpual has outlined: “the BMA believes that essential workers who cannot practice social distancing should now be provided with masks or suitable face coverings. This is in addition to rigorous infection control measures.”

We're making non-surgical cotton face masks and donating them to food banks, community organisations, kitchens making meals for the NHS and any other local organisations that express a need. Alongside our donations we are including effective re-usable face mask guidance on how to wear and launder.

How We’re Doing It:
We've initially acquired enough donated 100% cotton fabric to make over 1000 masks and are continuing the search for appropriate fabrics. By trying to get as much fabric donated as possible, we want to raise funds solely to buy trims, ship when we can't utilise our local volunteer drivers and most importantly pay the machinists.

We are now also selling masks to further be able to donate masks to community charities. For every mask bought, a mask will be donated: https://etsy.me/2XC9bfe

As an owner of a womenswear brand, Cristina Sabaiduc, has been working with small sampling studios and freelance machinist for 8+ years in London. These studios have been integral to many new designers being able to launch their brands on the market and we want to keep work coming to these studios. Many have had the majority of their work dry up in the last few weeks with uncertainty of when it will pick up again.

Our Current Process:
- All team members will wear appropriate PPE and will clean machines, worktables and tools regularly
- Social distancing measures have been put in place in working environments
- All masks will be washed above 60°C prior to packing
- Mask distribution will be carried out by volunteer drivers with appropriate contactless deliveries. If not available we'll be using Royal Mail or a carbon-negative courier service, but we will aim to limit this as much as possible.

Follow @wewearmasksuk to see which charities and organisations we're distributing to and who you've helped to protect!

What Do I Do If I Need Masks:
If you are a charity or community organisation based in East London and are in need of re-usable face masks please get in touch at [email redacted].

Disclaimer: These masks are not medical devices and will not be donated as a replacement for medical grade PPE.
