Dismayed by the images of destruction being inflicted on Ukraine? Disheartened by geopolitical conflicts that are beyond your ability to influence or guide? Wishing there was a way to reach affected individuals and improve their lives directly?
We’ve found a way and we’re asking for your help.
We’re a group of individuals living in Ravens Roost Cohousing community in Anchorage. We’re leveraging the US State Dept. affiliated Sponsor Circles program to welcome Ukrainians granted temporary asylum (humanitarian parole) in the USA for up to two years while the war rages in their homeland.
With the assistance of AllianceForUkraine , we’ve been matched with a young mother Svitlana and her two daughters. We have received approval for our I-134 Declaration of Support forms. We expect to be soon making travel arrangements.
Our Sponsor Circle team has committed to assisting this family with a long checklist of tasks, outlined by the Sponsor Circle program, including:
- Completing a US I-134 form where we demonstrate our financial ability to support these newcomers for up to two years.
- Coordinating their travel from Ukraine to the US.
- Having housing available for them on arrival.
- Assisting them with work authorization paperwork and application for Social Security numbers (expected to take several months to complete.)
- Selective Service registration (if appropriate), completing change of address forms (should they move), obtaining driver's licenses and state ID cards.
- Basic necessities to start their stay in Anchorage: food, clothing, furniture.
- Setting up utilities in their name: electric, internet, phone service.
- Financial support until their work authorization is granted.
- Access to services and benefits they are qualified to receive: could include SNAP, cash assistance. medical assistance.
- Enrollment with medical and other health service providers.
- School enrollment and child care services.
- English language acquisition.
- Cultural connections to food, faith communities and other resources.
- Community orientation to Anchorage and USA.
- Connection to workforce services and employment search services
- Transportation as needed, including orientation to local mass transit, ride-sharing, taxi, Uber…
We’ll use your donations to help us meet the expenses of these obligations, mainly housing and basic necessities. All our time is donated. Any funds raised in excess of immediate needs will be given to Alaska's statewide Refugee Resettlement Agency, administered for the state by Catholic Social Services.
