My name is Wei Guan, a single mother from China. I came to Toronto two years ago to care for my 16-year-old daughter, who was battling severe depression after immigrating here to live with her father.

I raised her alone in China after my divorce, while also caring for my mother with dementia. When her school asked me to come, I left everything behind to be with her. I rented the smallest room I could afford so as not to disrupt my ex-husband’s life, and I spent every week cooking for her, talking with her, and helping her slowly recover.

Just when my daughter’s condition began to stabilize, tragedy struck. In June 2025, I suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage. I was rushed to the hospital, underwent two brain surgeries, spent three weeks recovering—including five days in ICU—and miraculously survived, thanks to the incredible doctors and nurses.

Why I Need Help

As a visitor to Canada, I am not covered by public healthcare. Private insurance was far too expensive, and I never imagined such a medical crisis would happen. Now, I am left with over $150,000 in hospital bills I cannot pay.

Worse still, my treatment is not finished. I need a third surgery to replace two pieces of my skull that were removed during the earlier operations. The hospital requires me to pay upfront for CT scans, pre-surgery tests, surgery, and hospitalization before I can proceed. Without this surgery, my life is still at risk.

My Struggle

I came here to support my daughter’s fragile mental health. Instead, I find myself weak, in debt, and fighting for my life. My wonderful church community has helped me with meals, appointments, and prayers—but the financial burden is far beyond what I can manage.

More than anything, I feel deep guilt that instead of caring for my daughter, I have become a burden to her.
