Like many people spring 2020 finds me creating and designing new patterns for cloth face masks to give to friends and family. Last month I took on the challenge of sewing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) gowns with Sewing4good.org for health care workers. Hospitalizations are growing yet the staff are still under equipped and work in dirty gloves, raincoats and hefty bags.
This is unacceptable. At the request of the state of California,
spring 2020 requires a Rumpelstiltskin mountain of PPE. As an artist I stitch and switch to build whatever spirit dictates. Stamina is needed from a large and efficient crew of needle wielding warriors, who do not reside in China
Right now a few people are sewing to create water resistant isolation gowns during this tragic international shortage. Unfortunately this is not a short term problem, volunteer labor will be needed well into the future. Please forward the Sewing4good .org link to other people who may be interested in cottage industry manufacturing to help until the need for PPE is met or decreases.
As an experienced sewer and I was invited by the local gem Peninsula Wearable Art Guild to join the volunteers of Sewing4good based in Santa Clara County California to make 10,000 gowns for unmet orders. My work teaching art and assisting at dance retreats has all been suspended so now I have the time. My home and studio have been turned into a “clean space” to support the production of a minimum of five gowns per week. This week I made completed seven.
Each day I sew then stop to wipe down my studio with Lysol. I log progress and make note of what needs to be done next. It is apparent that I need to budget for maintenance. Hard driving machines requires servicing and essential supplies like oil, needles and thread. Fortunately the cloth is donated.
Above and beyond my labor and the materials on hand there is not much left to run on ahead into the future. This is a marathon. I need fuel. I see you. I am feeling tired but will not quit. You are just up the hill. Your cheering brings me joy and energy. Because you show up I am not alone. I still ache and yes I do groan but my strength is renewed and I keep going.
The donations given to Rachel Sews PPE will sponsor and support a supper sewer on the home team, far from the home stretch, in the home studio. You will keep her very busy needle in motion.
For a specific example, of how I will spend donations, this week my machine’s mechanical needle threader was damaged. Fortunately my partner and I were able to fix it. I jump for joy at to not have to bring it in for service, but maintenance is still necessary and requires funds to continue. My stimulus check has yet to arrive, has yours? If so please consider making donation, even $5 to help support Rachel Sews PPE.
Five dollars is my basic request, but if you can add a zero to that and make it $50 you or your beloved recipient will be mailed a washable handmade cloth mask as a gesture of my sincere gratitude.
