Rocio Diaz Earthquake Recovery Fund

Donation protected
My longtime friend and colleague, Rocio Diaz, her daughter and her daughter's father lost everything in Tuesday's  7.1 earthquake in Mexico City.  Please donate to help them recover what they have lost. This is their story.

"Del Valle. It is a nice, safe neighborhood with old and new buildings with everything at hand: bars, restaurants, schools, parks, supermarkets, etc. Or at least it used to be.
At noon lastTuesday, my 13 year old daughter and I were having lunch together at home. We were running a bit late, but enjoying our meal together, laughing and making jokes. She begged me to let her walk to school by herself, but as I always walk her to school, I told her no. Around 1 o´clock, we started getting ready.

1:09 was the last time I checked whatsapp, grabbed the keys, turned off the tv, and waited for her to be ready. Since she is a teen, she takes forever. And that's when we felt it. The first jolt.

During the last earthquake her father told us to stand under the kitchen door frame because we would be safe there. So at 1:14 we did. But then the kitchen tiles starting falling down, the walls cracked, windows fell down and shattered on the street. My daughter started to cry. I tried to remember all the earthquake workshops I had taken at work and the only thing I could think about as the ceiling started falling down around us was that we had to get out. I opened the door and saw another neighbour holding her dog. I told them to wait until it was over to go downstairs since the stairs could fall, too.

Finally, we were together. We were safe and sound outside on the sidewalk surrounded by our neighbors. Had I let my daughter go by herself she would've been with that friend of hers , right where another building collapsed and our story would've been totally different.

Now, our "nice" apartment in Del Valle is about to collapse, we have lost everything but our lives. I am grateful we are here alive."

Please donate money here. Rocio will use it to find a new place to live and buy all of the things she had to leave in her apartment that is set for demolition. If you can't, please donate clothes (women's or men's size small), shoes (women's size 3 and 5), and toiletries.

Note: Any donations made will be sent to my account in the US which I will transfer directly to her. GOFUNDME requires a US bank account which Rocio, who lives in Mexico City, doesn't have.
