"Save the Clock Tower!!"

Ely Nevada...to most just a blip on the map between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.  Fuel up, stretch your legs, and fleetingly wonder what goes on in that town as you tear off into the next stint of wilderness.  The answer though, is, just enough.  Unfortunately possibly not enough soon.  

The Historic (family run) Central Theater, like most theaters worldwide, is struggling to stay open. Yet, this isn’t just any theater. The owners put so much into restoring this classic historic spot.  If it goes away, so does a part of the little charm this mining town has left from times past.  It is also the only theater in town.  At Central Theater get your buttered popcorn sprinkled with one of the self serve flavored salts, and wash that down with one of the many beers they sell.  

Think back though, and remember the hands you've held, the lips you've kissed, the smile you see in the corner of your eye.  The rollercoaster of emotion the films you see allow you, family, friend, lover, or someone new in your life experience together.  That and just leaving reality at the door as you let the amazing world of film lift your spirit.  

Please donate, do not let this theater go out of business it is so beautiful, and important.  I am just a local resident in the town of Ely, I see the children, families, and tourists there needing the wholesome things we all take for granted to do.  I see a large meth problem around me daily, and with even less to do around town it scares me to think what will happen without it.

Built 1939Located approximately six blocks from downtown, the Central Theater was constructed by P.W. and Warren Hull in 1939. It served as Ely's largest movie house from the time of its opening until February, 1993.
The simple, Art Deco style is unique in Ely as most of the commercial building stock dates to the first few decades of twentieth century. Indeed, only one other theater with this "modern" styling is known in Nevada's small towns - the Gem Theater in Pioche.
The Central Theater displays many of the architectural features of Art Deco, including the geometric massing, the flat roof and stepped parapet and marquee, the variation in the brick to imply columns, and the horizontal banding at the roof line and chevron "capitals." Inside, the theater featured curvilinear spacing in the lobby, with a rounded counter, doors, and curves in the ceiling which echoed the shapes below, and indirect lighting; these were also characteristics of Art Deco.
