About us:

Funk Soul Productions is a small company of emerging Adelaide performers that believes in creating theatre for young people by young people. The ethos of our group is to create an environment for emerging artists to explore performing arts with hands-on, industry-level experience. As young people ourselves, we understand the need for challenging the perception of modern theatre, including making it more engaging and accessible in a world in which interest in theatre sadly appears to be slowly declining. Since establishing Funk Soul Productions in 2023, our team has produced two successful Shakespeare adaptations in the Adelaide Fringe and our first musical endeavour with The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals in 2025. With sell-out shows and stellar reviews, our producers have been labelled as “people to watch” by The Advertiser and “young South Australians who are making an impact” by the Commissioner for Children and Young People through their Get Around It initiative.

About the show:

Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee follows an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents who vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius.
