Over the past several years Katie has had several medical issues. Katie has seen numerous doctors and specialists in the area and had four different diagnoses with her intestinal issues. With those different diagnoses she was never actually “treated” for the issues. Calls to the doctor meant she could be seen in about 5-6 weeks or go the ER, which she had to do on several occasions.
Meanwhile, Katie was also diagnosed with a Malignant Melanoma, resulting in surgery, infections and a long healing process. A year later, another mass had to be surgically removed, and the medical bills continue to build.
Finally, after a year of bleeding Katie called Her GI doctor AGAIN, only to find out that he is no longer there. That was the final straw, so she called Mayo Clinic who has been rated as the #1 GI department. Her health had continued to decline as my daily life demands continue. Katie has to be healthy to raise her child and to be the best teacher she can be. They fast-tracked Katie in, test were run, and after a week spent at Mayo, She finally had a real diagnosis and was immediately started on a treatment plan. Katie is extremely anemic, and she has further tests to be done from their findings, but she is MUCH improved with the diagnosis and treatment Mayo has offered. Katie also has a follow up with an oncologist, food allergist, and nutritionist. One finding is also potentially life threatening and needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Katie has researched doctors in her insurance network and is waiting for those appointments that will be covered by her policy. Mayo is out of network with no cap and her portion so far with Mayo is over $20,000, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Katie has been told by numerous medical professionals that she need to not be stressed, but she has always worked and paid her way in life and the bills keep coming. Katie is a single parent of a preschooler living on a teacher salary and her medical bills are as much as her entire yearly salary. Katie has sole custody with no financial help. Katie would much rather be helping others, not asking for help herself, but two of her colleagues have approached her several times to let them do this so that others can help.
