We seek funding to achieve Purple Sanctuary, our vision of healing offering to the collective trauma too often tattooed on families of police brutality after the hashtag.
In 2018 D’Mario Perkins, our cousin was murdered during a traffic stop in Memphis, TN. D’Mario was a father of five, his youngest born one day before his death. Our family rallied, held vigils, and protested outside the police station with #blm and #justice4dmario signs. Then the lights went out, everyone went back to their lives and we were left alone with grief, despair, questions, and dispassion for the gatekeepers and organizations in our community.
Every year 1,000 innocent citizens are murdered by officers, their deaths unanswered, and their families left to pick up the pieces without intentional assistance. Their families allow their names to be used as hashtags in the hope of change; most often justice is unserved and these families struggle for years into their grief-stricken tomorrows.
We understand that without healing mechanisms, advocates they can trust and an equitable foundation on which to depend and fight, D’Mario’s children and similar families will be the next generation of traumatized citizens protesting in the streets.
Purple Sanctuary is our life’s trauma and organized efforts toward a journey to healing. It is a respite, resource, and resilience community for families seeking equitable, restorative, justice in officer-involved death. It is the only way we see life coming from such tragedy.
