Oceanarium Fundraiser - Punta San Juan Program!

Who are we?

We are Oceanarium Bournemouth, an aquarium made up of dedicated and passionate staff. We aim to make a difference and achieve many roles, one of which ultimately includes contributing towards the conservation of the natural world!

 

Who are we supporting?

Oceanarium Bournemouth support various conservation charities, however we have this year struck up a partnership with the Punta San Juan Program (PSJ) who aims to protect the Punta San Juan reserve in Peru along with its residents, including the Humboldt penguin.

 

Unfortunately Humboldt penguin numbers in recent years in particular are still plummeting due to human threats, such as but not limited to: guano mining (a valuable nesting material), climate change, oil spills, plastic pollution and overfishing.

 

Humboldt penguins are a South American species found along coastlines of Chile and Peru and are classed as critically endangered here. Whilst PSJ is home to the largest colony of Humboldts, between 2010-2014 there were approximately 3,500 - 5,000 individuals here and since 2017 there have only been 1,500-2,500. To put this into perspective there was estimated to be almost 1,000,000 individuals in total in the wild in the mid-19th century!

 

What do PSJ do?

The program aims to conserve the reserve and its species as well as aiming to pinpoint exact reasons for declines here, with dedicated and qualified Peruvian conservation staff carrying out activities such as research, monitoring, community engagement, capacity building and environmental education.

 

How does your donation help?

All of the work by the program ultimately comes down to one main necessity; staffing. Due to the economic impact of covid-19, funding for Peruvian conservation staff has been lost and with your help and our staff achieving our fundraising goal, we are aiding PSJ with carrying out all of these necessary duties to help conserve and protect Humboldts and other wildlife of Punta San Juan.
