Save Our Livers

Tax deductible
Our Fundraiser at a Glance
  • 1 in 3 US adults have fatty liver disease, and most do not know it. Most doctors do not screen for it either, so the diagnosis often comes too late - after the condition has had time to cause severe damage to the liver.
  • Fatty liver disease can be managed and somewhat reversed when caught early enough.
  • We are fundraising to screen 1,000 people at risk for fatty liver disease in Washington, DC.
  • Each $50 donation covers the cost of a liver screen for one person.
  • These funds will empower people with a chance to protect their health.

Fatty Liver Affects People Living with Food Insecurity

Who are we?
The Fatty Liver Foundation (FLF) is a patient-led non-profit dedicated to improving the diagnosis, treatment, and support of people with NAFLD/NASH in the U.S through awareness, education, screening, and patient advocacy.

NAFLD, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and NASH, or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, are conditions caused by too many carbohydrates, or sugar, in the diet. This sugar is stored in the liver as fat, causing NAFLD/NASH and liver damage. Screening lets diagnose the disease and, if found in early stages, prevent its evolution to liver failure or cancer.

Why do we need donations?
The FLF is partnering with the Hepatitis B Initiative of Washington DC (HBI-DC) in a project called the SUNN study to provide early screening and detection for people at risk of or living with NAFLD and NASH in the Washington DC area. We are especially focusing on minority and underserved communities since these communities may not always have access to healthcare services.

For every $50 donated, you will:

Help to diagnose non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in some of the 100 million adults who don’t know they have it
Empower those people to prevent the progression of the disease through changes in their diet and exercise
Improve the quality of life for the patients and their families. Healthy changes in diet and exercise will prevent disease progression and give people more quality time to spend with the ones they love.

Our goal is to raise enough funds to screen 1,000 people in the Washington, DC area. We included a 3% buffer to account for GoFundMe’s transaction fee for each donation.

Donations are not a requirement to participate in the SUNN study. Participation in the SUNN study is not required to receive liver screening. After the SUNN study is complete, the Velacur device will remain with HBI-DC to be used by the community. Any excess funds will be added to the NAFLD Screening Fund to support future screening projects - learn more about the NSF here . If we do not reach our goal, the monies raised will be put towards other efforts to screen the community.
