Project Hawaii is a non-profit summer camp which gives underprivileged children a chance to get ahead in school and life. While tourism brings money to the economy, it has led to an increase of housing costs as well as retail price, which has a big impact on those in poverty. Hawaii has the highest homeless rate out of the states, consisting of 465 per 100,000 people, where one third of them are children. Project Hawaii provides two 5-day sleepover camps for children on the Big Island and Oahu.  To achieve their goal of helping underprivileged kids with these beneficial camps, they equip the children with supplies and enriching field trips to better their future.

The majority of homeless children depend on school meals for food. Studies show that over summer break, the academic performance of kids in poverty can regress an entire school year due to the lack of nutrition. Project Hawaii provides the children with healthy snacks and meals which gives them the nutrition they need in order to thrive academically and as a developing child.  In addition to nutritious meals, Project Hawaii takes the campers on field trips which are intended to give them opportunities of education they normally aren’t able to access.  An example of one of these field trips is when the camp takes the kids to the beach to teach them about the habitat's ecosystem.

These donations will be used to provide the  campers with nutritious meals, hygienic and school supplies, and funding for field trips and transportation.

For 3 weeks this summer I am volunteering for Project Hawaii’s summer camp.  Since September, I have been saving up for Project Hawaii, and was able save $1000. I have been traveling to Hawaii for over 10 years and appreciate it's strong community and it's members. I want to give back to this community that I feel connected to, and I cannot think of a better way than helping to enriching the lives of the community's children.  Through my volunteering I am hoping to provide the sense of a "big sister" and share my knowledge with these kids as well as learn from them.   Please considering donating by clicking on the buttom below, which will go directly to Project Hawaii.  Every cent counts and will be extremely appreciated by the children of Hawaii!
