The present intention is so help the hard working Project SEPIT volunteers and their families, as well as the families in the local communities in and around Tampaksiring that are in most dire need of assistance. As we are aware, the global shutdown has brought tourism to a stand still in Bali and many families are struggling there to obtain basic essentials and food. We are therefore raising funds at this moment to help the Tampaksiring community, including many Project SEPIT volunteers.

Project SEPIT, the brainchild of Founder Ketut Arambawa, commenced service in 2017 in Ketut’s hometown of Tampaksiring.
According to the Indonesian Environment and Forestry Ministry, almost 10 billion plastic bags are used in Indonesia every year, with almost all of them ending up as waste. Indonesia, with the fourth largest population in the world, is the second largest contributor of the ocean’s plastic deposits. Every minute an astonishing 500 kilograms of plastic (or 720 tons per day) makes its way to the waters from Indonesian shores. Some estimates put this at 15% of the oceans’ plastic deposits, a huge amount for one country.
Deeply troubled by the vast amounts of plastic and trash he saw whilst attending the various ceremonies in and around Tampaksiring, Ketut gathered the leaders of his community to discuss what actions could be taken to tackle the problem. Ketut was given the green light by the community leaders to start a movement aimed at reducing the plastic (and trash) in Tampaksiring. Ketut’s first recruits for the cleanups were his friends and family, but after partnering with local School District 6, its students were added to the ranks of people cleaning the streets and waterways of Tampaksiring.
Since then, dedicated volunteers and students walk the streets and jungles of Bali to clean up the plastic and other trash every Saturday morning using sepits or bamboo tongs and large reusable bags. Once the cleanup is done, they separate and sort the plastic and trash into the correct bins that Project SEPIT has created and distributed.
Our mission is to change the future of Bali and wherever our work spreads to as far reversing the impact that plastic waste has made through education and cleanups. We aim to raise money for these operations through fundraisers, campaigns and donations for various undertakings.
At present, Project SEPIT is funded and operated completely by unpaid volunteers and are doing this work out of love for their community and their children. Our goal is to expand our operations, educational work, and environmental cleanups therefore it will require stable financial backing in order to carry out our mission. Your donation will go towards:
- the purchase of a plastic shredding machine;
- the purchase of a new water pump for the village of Tampaksiring, eliminating the need for water bottled in plastic;
- the purchase of a second hand truck to transport the plastic to recycling and upcycling points in Bali, as well as to buyers of our plastic waste;
- the completion of the construction of a workshop next to our permaculture garden to give seminars and workshops on plastic reduction and permaculture
