Preserve Graniteville Tree Swamp!

Donation protected
Even though we did not misrepresent the facts - as has been stated elsewhere - and we did not get the support of the City Council that we hoped for - we remain a group of concerned community members on the North Shore of Staten Island, and continue to fight to keep a local wetlands forest of 2,000 mature trees from being destroyed to make way for a Big Box Store.  The removal of these trees and the filling-in of the wetlands which they occupy, will leave the neighborhood - its residents and business owners - vulnerable to flooding.  This tree swamp spared this neighborhood from worse destruction than it already endured from Superstorm Sandy.  The soaring cost of flood insurance and the loss of Mom & Pop stores will financially devastate the community, as well.  Environmentally, the trees absorb/block air pollution emitted from nearby chemical plants.  The North Shore of Staten Island has a high rate of childhood asthma and Staten Island has the highest cancer rate of the five boroughs.  Please donate to our campaign so that we may obtain legal counsel to have this situation - the legal decision of which was originally arrived at based on data which is now no longer environmentally relevant - reassessed by the courts.  WE HAVE NOTHING TO GAIN BY THIS FIGHT EXCEPT THE PROTECTION OF OUR HOMES, OUR BUSINESSES, OURSELVES.  Thank you.  It Ain't Over Until It's Over!!
