Mackenzie Health Hospital PPE Donation Drive

Frontline medical professionals are just like us. They are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, children, and friends. They are putting their health at risk to protect all of us in this fight against COVID19. We can help them by staying at home, but we know many of us are also looking for other ways to support our healthcare workers during this pandemic.
On March18th, a small group of friends and family members of frontline hospital staff decided to start a PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) donation drive for Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital. We encountered great enthusiasm amongst our friends and relatives who donated generously to our cause. We used these initial funds to purchase 1000 face shields, but we realized that there was still a tremendous need for PPE to ensure our physicians and allied health professionals can keep safe while delivering care.
The need to expand our campaign was the genesis for PAC19 (Parents Against COVID19). PAC19 is led by four family members of frontline staff, wanting to support and fight alongside with our masked heroes. We expanded our campaign to GoFundMe, Facebook and Instagram to help bring more awareness to this cause.
You may wonder why not donate money directly to the Mackenzie Health Foundation? Unfortunately, the foundation and the hospital are bound by rules and contracts that stipulate who they are allowed to purchase supplies from. With medical organizations throughout the country looking to purchase PPE, most of this vital equipment is now on backorder. As the number of COVID infections increase, there is a possibility that many hospitals will run out of PPE before they can be replenished through the regular supply chains. Our group is not restricted by where we can obtain these supplies, thus enabling us to act as another source for this PPE.
The funds raised by this campaign will be used directly to purchase the PPE items most needed by our frontline hospital staff. Mackenzie Health has indicated the areas of greatest need at this time are for N95 respirators and face shields. 100% of your donation (minus the GoFundMe transaction fees) goes toward PPE purchases. Should there be any remaining funds at the end of our campaign, it will all be donated to the Mackenzie Health Foundation.
The COVID 19 pandemic is a truly unprecedented global health crisis that has already impacted all our lives in ways unimaginable only a couple of months ago. As family members of front line hospital staff, every time we say goodbye as they head into work, we hope and pray that they will come home safe. We know our loved ones willingly risk their health to care for others when they are at their most vulnerable, but they should not feel vulnerable themselves because there is not enough PPE to go around. It is ironic that we are told that the only way to beat this pandemic is to distance ourselves from those we care about, but we hope that by engaging in endeavours such as PAC19, we can prove that the only way we can actually win is by supporting each other and coming together!
