OW High School goes to Spain!
Donación protegida
My name is Chloé Suberville - I am a Spanish I teacher at Orangeburg Wilkinson High School. OW High School is a Title I school, where minorities constitute 97% of the school population and where 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Students at OW are extremely dedicated and passionate individuals, who sometimes lack opportunities to show their full potential.
“The world is the true classroom. The most rewarding and important type of learning is through experience, seeing something with our own eyes.” – Jack Hanna
Education and world discovery are the most important tools we possess to change the world. As my students grow into young adults, with imagination and passion beyond my classroom walls, the heart of my work lies in helping my students expand their horizon.
My first year with Teach for America as a High School Spanish teacher is rapidly coming to a close, and the admiration and love I have developed for my students and community is immeasurable. My student’s dedication to their education, their eagerness to learn, and their longing to achieve the unimaginable has inspired me to create an opportunity for them to put all of that magic to work – a trip that will take them across Spain during the Spring of 2016!!!
In our world language classroom, my students and I work to understand the importance of learning a new language in such a globalized world. I am organizing this trip to Spain as a stepping-stone for my kids to begin their paths as successful future world leaders. Not only will they be able to discover another world; they will also be earning college credits for attending this trip. Students will complete a project that they will be able to share with their community, inspiring other students to dream beyond what they think is possible.
However, organizing such a trip poses an important financial roadblock for my students. Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School is a title I school, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, where the high rates of unemployment and lack of opportunities, are creating a vicious cycle of generational poverty. Many of my students have never left the state of South Carolina, and are finding very few opportunities to do so.
Fortunately, with the help of my school and some very ambitious students, we are one step closer to creating a chance to break out of this cycle, by discovering one of the world’s most amazing countries, while at the same time being able to directly apply the language skills they have learned in my class.
My hope is that this trip will spark an interest in my students to open their minds to other cultures, inspire them to see the importance of language in their road to higher education, and allow them to self-advocate for a life filled with endless opportunities.
Along with the large payments that my students will be making, we are fundraising for passport costs, food and any extra costs during the trip.
I am asking you to please consider this investment in the leaders of tomorrow.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about what may very well be, the trip of a life time!
