My niece, Chelsey, and her husband, Niko, attended the No Kings protest in LA on June 14th. They wanted to march with protesters in LA to show solidarity with the immigrants and neighborhoods that have been under siege by ICE during the last several weeks.
It started out a beautiful day of togetherness and community. My niece even got to meet Representative Maxine Waters.
Things took a dark and unfortunate turn while peacefully protesting. LAPD opened fire with rubber bullets. Chelsey and Niko were separated as they ran from the officers and hid behind cars. Chelsey later found Niko with a medic. Niko had a bullet shaped hole in his face mask. When he removed his mask his mouth had been ripped open and he was bleeding profusely. The police were still coming and rushing them, and they struggled to find a safe place to hide for the medics to help Niko. Once the bleeding was stopped, they rushed Niko to the trauma unit where he had surgery.
The surgery was not covered by insurance. This young couple should not be burdened with the ongoing medical and dental expenses related to the physical and emotional trauma incurred by the out of control actions of the LAPD.
