Medical Relief Trip to Huancayo, Peru!

This summer I am traveling to Huancayo, Peru to volunteer at local public clinics and hospitals with the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children! Huancayo is located in the highlands of Peru, and while it is a popular desintation for tourists, the majority of the population lives in poverty. The hospitals and clinics in the city are underfunded and understaffed, and have a large number of patients whose needs are being unmet. The most common illnesses in this area are due to lack of nutrition, access to clean water, and sanitary living conditions - preventable illnesses with the right resources, funding, and help.
I'm excited to have the opportunity to do many amazing things while with the local hospitals. A large part of this program is health education and I will be able to educate local schools and communities on basic hygeine and nutrition practices in order to prevent the most prevalent illnesses. Additionally, I will be able to have direct patient interaction at the hospital taking patient vitals and histories and going on rounds with local medical students. I will also get the chance to observe surgeries such as C-Sections and learn suturing techniques. All of this would allow me to benefit local people while providing myself with invaluable experience!
This trip is truly a once in a lifetime chance for me to get hands-on medical experience and donate my time and energy to a place that could really benefit from enthusiastic volunteers! It's my dream to be a doctor and work with children, and this trip is an amazing opportunity for me to discover what that feels like. However, I can't make it to Peru without the help of my family and friends! The program cost for this trip is about $1300 and the flights are about $700. Additionally, there are some other things I must purchase in order to travel to Peru and to volunteer at the hospital. This brings my anticipated total to $2300. I hope to raise this money by May 1 as I leave on my trip on May 9!
