Our son, Owen, is one of our 16-year old twin boys.
Biological parents: My husband Nick, & Kelly. Stepmom: Me, Stepdad: Pat
Siblings in our house: Easton, Brylee, and Krew.
Siblings in other house: Ashton (twin brother) Cora, Brooklyn, & Jordan.
**If you cannot give, we just ask that you please pray for all of us listed above, as we try to navigate through this, the Jesus way. Also, please note, 100% of these funds are for the cost of the treatment, not for any personal use**
My intent is to be open with our church community because we believe in the power of prayer and leaning in on our “second family.” We aren’t extending this further than our community, due to the content being personal, sensitive, and for Owen’s protection, since he’s still a minor.
Owen has opened up to us approximately 1-year-ago about some extreme inner demons he’s been battling. We thought it was a possible phase, but unfortunately, during some of the most challenging years of his life, he’s conforming to what our culture has to say and it’s led him to a really dark place. He has some very abnormal and unhealthy addictions and obsessions. He is consumed with fantasies and does not have interest in reality. He has been recently diagnosed with some additional mental illnesses and is not expressing remorse for recent behaviors he’s exhibited. His cry for help began a month ago when he had suicidal thoughts, which led to his first admission to a treatment center. Unfortunately, they kicked him out of that center for violating the rules, which happened this past week, after manipulating everyone into believing he was okay.
He’s currently at a well-known and highly effective treatment center in Utah, called Star Guides, which is a very specific wilderness treatment program that’s a minimum of 4-months long. We are not allowed to speak to Owen during this time, but have weekly zoom calls with a therapist to discuss a recap. He may write to us, if he chooses. The program truly hones in on the addictions, thoughts, and behaviors he’s battling, while simultaneously treats teens who struggle with identifying who they are.
His criteria didn’t match many centers that focused on all he encompasses, which is why this one is special, it’s just really expensive, and won’t consider any payment plans!
In addition, insurance doesn’t cover any cost and we don’t qualify for any grants, scholarships, or loans at this time. My husband is also 4-months into his OWN recovery from addictions, and although he’s doing amazing (through the grace of God), he’s now trying to navigate how he can help his son, too. It seems impossible at times, but I do have hope both of them will one day thank everyone who believed and helped them.
The total cost of the program is: $30,700.
That’s split 50/50 between his biological parents (Nick & Kelly).
Additionally, we have to pay another $2k for him getting kicked out of his past center.
That’s $17,350 that we need to come up with in 120 days. Even “something” is more than “nothing,” we do understand how much this amount is and will pray about how we can make it work.
We have a $5,250.00 deposit past due, was due 5-1-22, and have been granted until Friday to pay that in full. Our contract had already been signed by both biological parents; that all finances will be paid, even if we didn’t know how quick payment #1 would approach. We didn’t have time to plan for this, and we really want him to be able to receive this treatment, but just don’t have the funds readily available to pay for it.
I am generally VERY uncomfortable asking for help, especially regarding financial circumstances. But this isn’t about me, it’s about Owen, and I know that I have to advocate for him, love him through this, and do whatever it takes to make it work. My husband and I are trusting God can move, and if you’re able to provide anything, we would be forever grateful.
Within past 4 days of knowing all of this, I prayed about what to do. God clearly spoke to me and said this is the place for him, and one thing he instilled in my head was this:
Nick was exactly 4-months sober on 4-29-22, the same day that his son, Owen, was admitted to Star Guides treatment program for 4-months long. God said to me, look how far Nick has come and all the work I have done, don’t doubt that I can’t do that for Owen too!
We know Owen is hurting, but we also know that God won the battle already, and we believe he will break these chains!
Again, we are huge believers in the power of prayer, so If you can’t give, will you please pray for us?
