Walking 630 miles for 3 charities

Donation protected
Hi everyone, we are Amy and Darren!
We will be walking the entire 630 mile South West Coast Path in one go. This is a huge challenge and it will be to fundraise for 3 charities close to our heart.
1. Mind
2. Dementia UK
3. South West Coast Path Association.

In order to raise money for these important charities the walk will take us 58 days to complete with only 5 rest days and the elevation gained is equivalent to climbing Everest 4 times! We have never done anything like this before. There is significant training and planning involved and we are doing this in time around our full time work.
Below are some of the reasons we'd like to raise money for our chosen charities.

1. Mind is a mental health charity. "They provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding".

After losing our best friend, knowing others that are close to us struggle and as a nation go through a pandemic when we were at times left with only our thoughts at home; the importance of mental health has hit home and we want to support this charity which has power to make change. They have been able to influence change in laws, policies and create links to support other charities and organisations. We all have mental health. It matters in some way, to all of us.

2. About 5 years ago my nan Sylvia received a diagnosis of Vascular Dementia with Alzheimers. It has been a very confusing and upsetting time for nan. She does not understand her diagnosis or recognise changes that are happening within her.

Through this time my family and I have been supporting nan as much as possible. We are now being given help by social care services whilst we find a care home that can meet nan's needs on a daily and equally minute by minute basis.

Dementia is such a fluctuating, changing and individual condition. It is not just about memory loss, as I previously thought myself. There are different types, different symptoms, different behaviours and its all quite mind boggling. Caring for Nan up till this point has been intense and I have personally rang Dementia UK a couple of times to reach out for support. They have a helpline with trained Admiral nurses who specialise in Dementia. They were extremely helpful and continue to do a great job.

We'd like to raise money for Dementia UK to raise awareness of this condition and to help support other families dealing with Dementia.

3. The SWCP has given us as a couple, freedom, fitness, escape, enjoyment and adventure to name a few. We are so grateful to have access to such a stunning coastline steeped in history. However, maintaining the SWCP is costly; it costs £1,400 on average to maintain just 1 mile of the 630! We will be using the SWCP for our challenge and want to give back donations to show our appreciation and gratitude of this National trail.

We are investing several thousand pounds of our own money into our challenge for things like accommodation, equipment, food and travel etc. Any money raised on this website and by donations offline will be split equally and sent directly to the 3 named charities.

We appreciate any support or donations given. Thank you.
