Brooklyn’s Story
Two days before Christmas 2015, our beautiful blue eyed baby girl, Brooklyn, made her debut. I, Bronson, left work and made my way to the hospital, though I was unsure if I was Brooklyn’s biological father. I didn’t know if I was Brooklyn’s father, due to allegations made by Brooklyn’s biological mother the entirety of her pregnancy. Aside from all of the allegations, I knew that I would never want to miss the birth of my baby, let alone my first baby. When I arrived at the hospital, Brooklyn’s maternal grandfather asked to speak with me. We stepped into the hall where he advised that I request a paternity test before signing anything, as he did not believe I was Brooklyn’s father. I requested a paternity test through the hospital, but I was denied the paternity test. Unbeknownst to myself, Elizabeth was married. In the state of Utah, that meant that her legal husband, at the time of Brooklyn’s birth, automatically become Brooklyn’s “alleged” father. There was absolutely nothing I could do.
Brooklyn’s biological mother continued to tell me that I was Brooklyn was my daughter, but then she wasn’t. She had multiple men believing that they were Brooklyn’s father. At different times, Brooklyn’s biological mother would ever text my wife, Brettney, and tell her that her new boyfriend or husband was Brooklyn’s father. I told Brooklyn’s biological mother multiple times that once a legal paternity test was completed, I would take full responsibility as Brooklyn’s father. Brooklyn’s biological mother would get upset and cut off all communication. She would only contact me when something was supposedly wrong.
She contacted me through snap chat one night stating that her new husband was on meth and freaking out around Brooklyn. The police were contacted, but again, there was nothing I could do. These games went on for about a year and a half.
In August 2017 I received a request from ORS for a paternity test regarding Brooklyn. I called immediately and scheduled the earliest appointment. I also contacted an attorney, as I had no idea what fight I was about to have to put up.
After many meetings with our attorney, Brettney and I learned that Brooklyn had been removed from her biological mothers custody, and the state was currently looking for Brooklyn’s biological father, as Brooklyn was waiting to be adopted by her foster parents.
Brooklyn was found in a motel, in March 2017. She had an extreme rash on her bum, she was very malnourished, she was believed to be high from marijuana smoke that filled the motel room, and she appeared to be severely neglected.
Due to Brooklyn’s biological mother being married at the time Brooklyn was born, Brooklyn was immediately taken into state custody, and placed with her “alleged father’s” parents. Between the months of March and September 2017, Brooklyn’s alleged father was one of a few men tested for paternity, whose test came out negative. During this time, Brooklyn’s biological mother requested to give up her rights and let Brooklyn’s foster parents adopt her. In order for the adoption to be made, Brooklyn’s biological father had to either sign his rights away, or have them terminated.
It was also learned that Brooklyn tested positive for for meth and marijuana, as her many care takers, while in her biological mothers custody, blew marijuana smoke in Brooklyn’s face her whole life.
It also came to light that Brooklyn was sexually abused, up until 15 months old, by her maternal grandfather. The same man who told me not to sign Brooklyn’s birth certificate. It was found that this man also had sexual relations with his daughters, and Brooklyn was believed to have been his.
Brettney and I called ORS ever single day to find out if results had come back. Almost a month after I took the paternity test, we finally received notice that the results had been mailed or could also be picked up. Brettney and I raced to the ORS office. We learned that Brooklyn was my biological daughter. Immediately, the state and faster parents were requesting I sign my rights over and I would never have to have any ties to Brooklyn, as she would be adopted. I absolutely denied the request. There was no way I was going to let my child grow up without her daddy.
Brooklyn’s biological mother retracted her voluntary parental right termination as soon as she found out I was going to fight for Brooklyn. The state also requested to terminate my rights, because I would not just voluntarily sign them over. Brettney and I knew we were going to be fighting an uphill battle, but little did we know, the battle would take 11 LONG months of fighting, both the state and Brooklyn’s foster parents. The state requested to terminate my rights for neglecting Brooklyn. After providing all of the evidence of my intentions to take full responsibility of Brooklyn, and the judge acknowledging the fact that Brooklyn had a father in the eyes of the state, Brettney and I were granted sole custody and guardianship.
During the 11 long months of fighting, Brooklyn’s biological Mother had gone to jail multiple times and never completed anything requested by the courts. As a result, she did not lose her rights, but we are required to file documents with the juvenile and 2nd district court regarding custody and visitation agreements and what Brooklyn’s biological mother needs to complete to extend visits. Once these documents have been filed with both courts, we can finally have the case closed.
Until then, the case remains open and our family cannot move forward. Between all of the court hearings and attorney visits, Brettney and I have over $10,000 in attorney fees. Together, we have already paid thousands, but due to the outstanding high balance, our attorney has requested Brettney and I file the documents with the courts, in order to close the case, and continue making payments to him. Unfortunately, Brettney and I cannot afford to file the documents or pay the attorney fees down, in enough time. We are asking for any help or support that our friends and family can provide to help with any attorney fees and court filings.
Brettney and I have received enormous amounts of support and love through the last year. We want to thank everyone, who has and continues to fight for Brooklyn with us.
