On the Journey of a Lifetime Hi all
My name is Dave Dickey and I am truly on the Journey of a lifetime, but because of my financial situation I find that I need to ask for help in this journey. A brief background bit about me. I am 65 years old and last year I had the great oppurtunity to go to New Orleans and work with a really fantastic grassroots organization. ( United Saints Recovery Project) as a volunteer . I had planned on spending 2 weeks doing this but fell in love with all they were doing and was actually there for 10 weeks.
Because they are a small grass roots org . and do not have much for funds I am trying to help them find volunteers to come and help rebuild and repair some of the 20,000 homes which still need help. YES that 20,000 is the true number of homes in New Orleans that still need repair.
Last year with the help from volunteers from all over the United States they repaired 16 homes worked on 3 churchs and did many many community services projects , but they have a problem and it is a big one they need more volunteers and donations if they are to continue to help those that despirately need it. Most people think that New Orleans is all fixed, but it is now the poorest of the poor and the aged need help and they rely on and get that from United Saints. They provide free labor to those people who without that could never hope to have their homes fixed up to proper living standards.
NOW to where does my Journey of a lifetime come into this. I am retired and have been building a Gypsy wagon to live in and travle around the country SPREADING the word of the Saints and their efforts to help the citizens of New Orleans.
I have already made it to New Orleans and will be traveling out from here speaking to colleges, High schools, Faith Based organizations . Along with many community based organizations to help fund the volunteers expenses and explain why this is a real good thing for them to do.
I have to have my wagon to live in because I can not afford to stay in motels and hotels while traveling.
I have the Wagon near ready now but it is still a work in progress and on the trip here from Maine one of the brakes became damaged and needs repair. I am seeking help covering the small remaining expenses to finish the wagon and the road expenses for traveling for the next few months. I need a permanent roof cover ( right now using a tarp ) Brakes repaired on trailer. some hinges for door and windows. and because of towing the wagon with a bad brake my truck is in need of a brake job. I you have read this far you musty beinterested and I am asking for your help any amount will be greatly appreciated . what is left from repairs will be used to cover the costs of travel.. Thanks will be up dating on progress .. and trying to figure a rewards program
