OUR MISSION:
To support and protect our community and those working on the front lines in healthcare with face shields 3D-printed and fabricated for donation.
WHO WE ARE:
Brooks and Vi, the creative duo behind Olde City Escape Games in Philadelphia, PA.
When we started Olde City Escape Games, the core of our company was founded on the idea that we could offer people meaningful and fun experiences away from the digital screen - experiences that would be collaborative, physically interactive, mentally challenging, and socially engaging across multiple generations.
COVID-19 has fundamentally changed public life and all social norms as we know it. While we fully embrace the necessary measures to prioritize public safety, a business that is centered on community interaction and team building cannot operate while practicing safe social distancing.
So we thought, what can we do in this time to reach out, engage people and support our community?
ENTER OPERATION PPE:
In the spirit of responsible social engagement and meaningful design, we’ve shifted our efforts to the production of face shields for healthcare professionals battling the virus face-to-face.
Like many makers in this grassroots fabrication movement, the two of us are working hard from home to 3D-print and manufacture as many face shields to donate as we can. Typically, we'd be using our 3D-printer to create props for our escape rooms, but we are committed to doing all we can to continue supporting our communities during these uncertain times.
THE DETAILS:
The current face shield demand among medical facilities in Philadelphia alone now exceeds 1 million units.
Currently limited to one 3D-printer running 12 hours a day, we're able to fabricate 8-11 face shields per day. At this rate, we will be able to produce and deliver just under 80 units a week to those most in need of supplies. We desperately want to increase our production!
Our face shields are a 2-part design following the production guidelines from Sabin Lab & Cornell Engineering, and are approved by the NIH. It includes a 3D-printed visor and a heavyweight transparency sheet that snaps into place. The shield is meant to be worn over an N95 respirator to help prevent the spread of bodily fluids from infected patients to healthcare workers.
This design is specifically optimized so that we can produce as many shields as possible, with as little material as possible in a day for donation.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Up to this point, we've been self-funding this initiative even while our business is on mandatory shutdown and our revenue stagnant at zero. Your support won't save our business, but will help us push to the next level of production to create the protective gear our cities, states, and country desperately need right now. 100% of all contributions will be used to produce and deliver face shields.
Donations will be used to purchase:
- filament (material used to 3D print visors).
- transparencies to produce the shields.
- packing and shipping supplies needed to get our face shields in the hands of the proper facilities
For context, $35 supports the cost for one roll of filament, which can produce ~ 100 visors. $25 supports the cost of 100 sheets of transparency. Your donations go a long way!
Provided enough funding, we hope to purchase more 3D-printers ($300/printer) to raise our daily capacity for production. If possible, we would like to acquire a UV sterilization cabinet ($200) to help ensure our supplies are efficiently disinfected before delivery. Many hospitals are set up to sterilize upon delivery, while many other smaller facilities are unable to and therefore cannot accept these types of donations.
Our priority is to donate locally, but we are happy to ship anywhere these might be needed. So far, we've been in touch with individuals helping to coordinate donation drop offs to Jefferson Hospital, Hospital of UPenn, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Pennsylvania Hospital, Inspira Mullica Hill (NJ), Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, and individuals doing harm reduction street outreach in Philly.
Our best efforts at beating COVID-19 takes teamwork. We're all we've got -- and we're more with your help!
