The Lake District Calvert Trust has lost £1 million in income and faces closure. Our 12 year old son, Oliver, is raising money to save it because it is the charity that transformed his life. Oliver suffered a catastrophic brain injury when he was just two days old. He survived but was left blind and with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and learning difficulties. His life is very hard. When he was a little boy we could take him to the Lake District and get him into the outdoors, but after the age of 5 it started to be too difficult and too dangerous for us....until we found the Calvert Trust when he was 10. They’ve opened up his world and shown him that nothing is impossible. The centre offers outdoor, adventure experiences to groups and families, so what Oliver does we ALL do and that’s really amazing. It’s normally so hard for us all to do the same activity and so the Calvert brings us together as a family like nowhere else! It’s our happy place, our safe haven and Oliver is the happiest boy alive there. He told us that he loves it so much because ‘everyone is the same there’. He achieves wonderful things and feels pride when we visit by accessing the great outdoors: climbing fells, cycling, rock climbing, ghyll scrambling, abseiling, canoeing and horse riding. The Lake District Calvert Trust allow him to be free from his brain injury. In truth it allows us all to be free from the constraints of a catastrophic injury and just to be happy together, but the Trust is in danger of having to close after losing £1 million in income during the covid-19 pandemic.
