Well on the surface it is a fundraiser for a local organisation close to my heart but dig a little deeper and you will probably find an old man in an existential crisis trying to ward off the inevitable!
As I got into my 50's it started to become apparent that the health and fitness that I had always been lucky enough to take for granted could no longer be relied on with the same degree of certainty. I started to creak and groan as I moved and I didn't like it.Then in my mid 50's I was introduced to CrossFit and everything changed. I had found the thing that worked for me and 5 years later I'm well and truly hooked, fitter, stronger and more agile than I was 20 years ago (SERIOUSLY).

So to mark the transition into my 60's, and the vain attempt to fight off the inevitable, I thought I'd try something to prove to the world and myself that I'M NOT OLD! Even though I know it's coming fast. I decided to do an all day work out and it made sense for it to be an opportunity for fundraising and as soon as that thought emerged there was only one contender for me 'The Warren'. When I decided on a career change in the mid 1990's The Warren was the first organisation to give me a break and employment. I worked there for about 4 years and became attached. Then in 2015(ish) I joined the board, where I was very proud to serve for another 4 years. I believe in the ethos and the values of The Warren, it has a place in my heart and I wanted to do something tangible to support the great work and the great young people that are at the centre of the organisation. So please support this endeavour in any way you can. All contributions large or small will go directly toward funding work relating to health and wellbeing with the young people of The Warren. If you don't know about the work of The Warren please continue reading and or check their website or social media. Thanks in advance,
Mark Sowerby

About The Warren Youth Project
For the past 38 years, The Warren Young People’s Project has been providing vital support services to young people in Hull, many of them marginalised and vulnerable (more than 1,100 of them in 2018-19 alone). Operating from a former fire-station in Hull city-centre, The Warren’s small staff team offers free support, guidance, training, education, counselling, employability skills/training, digital skills and innovations and exciting creative expression activities and services to young people aged 14-25 who are experiencing issues relating to a whole range of social ills such as unemployment, food poverty (through our café) fuel poverty, homelessness, sexual abuse, physical abuse, substance-abuse, bullying, neglect, domestic violence, family-relationship breakdown, learning difficulties, racism and homophobia. We also work very closely with young people who are experiencing physical and mental health problems such as self-harming, eating disorders, depression, STDs and loneliness to name but a few. We also work with young people up to the age of 29 on the issue of employability and skills (by appointment) and with young people aged 11-15 around issues of sexuality and gender identity.

We specifically target this broad demographic to ensure that we can comprehensively support young people’s progression through - and transition from - adolescence to adulthood in a number of areas, not least of which is their mental health wellbeing. At the Warren, we’re about ensuring that young people are listened to and get the support and the space and time that they might need to take control of their own lives and make the right choices. Our staff strive hard to create the environment that enables young people to feel safe and supported to talk about the things that are bothering them and also to campaign on issues that they feel passionate about.
We value our relationships with young people and know that they are incredibly resourceful and, with support, can ultimately be trusted to know best about their own lives. We do this by ensuring that our 37-year-old Empowerment Policy is central to our working practice and subsequently equips young people with the necessary life skills to make informed choices. To do that successfully requires an environment where young people can be who you they are without feeling judged. We believe that we create that place at The Warren.

We also provide a music & creative industries service which supports young people to develop their creative potential and transferrable skills-set in any field or genre by providing free rehearsal and recording studio space and support. As well as being a vital element of our strategy to support and empower vulnerable young people, our creative team also play a prominent role in the city’s arts community by facilitating access for those who might not otherwise engage and is working through national and international networks to promote local creative talent – with a strong emphasis on music. It is now a primary partner in all the city’s major festivals and has successfully facilitated countless live performances along with the digital release of hundreds of music recordings through Warren Records which may never have been heard due to the unaffordability of recording facilities to young people.

We have recently invested in a new and exciting project called The Curve - The Curve is a project focusing on all things digital, a place for all young people to engage in a community of like-minded peers and embrace digital technology.

We have a new and exciting setup of different tech and software. The Warren's record shop and is now The Curve: a high tech hub for digital creatives. We have repurposed the space into something very cool, with opportunities for getting hands-on with iMacs and iPads filled with amazing software, Coding, HoloLens for experiencing and interacting with AR technology, VR development, 3D design/development, game playing and development access all of which will enhance many levels of skills and confidence in a digital sense, and all for free.

We aim to build a community for digitally-minded people and businesses, and any other organisation or individual that might want to support, engage and share anything interesting with young people, We want young people in Hull to have the same opportunities in getting access to digital tech and skills which will help empower them to gain knowledge and follow there own digital paths, whether its a passion or a route to employment.

The Warren is governed by our own internal young persons’ parliament (called ‘The Thing’) which debates, decides and votes on the services provision that young people require and in turn task our staff team to deliver those services. This lever of governance empowers young people to be the primary driving force in securing the services they feel they need.
