Oglala Family Home Repair
Donation protected
Our friends, who live in Oglala on the Pine Ridge Reservation, are in urgent need of home repairs. There are 19 people living in this two bedroom home. Nine of whom are children under the age of 10.
There is currently no hot water and very limited running water (access is only available from the bathtub or a leak in the broken water heater). The kitchen sink, stove, fridge, toilet and bathroom sink are all broken/unsafe and urgently need to be replaced. There is mold that needs removing, deteriorating and/or rotten wood throughout the house that needs to be removed and replaced, floors, drywall and windows need replacing or fixing (depending on extent of damage). There are mass electrical problems; all electrical sockets need repairing and most lights need fixing.
Due to COVID-19, the family has had to stay inside much more than usual this year and the family members in this household have risen. The head of the household is a spiritual leader who doesn't earn income from his work. A few of the adult children hope to be able to soon go back to work and raise their children elsewhere. But for now, this winter and during a pandemic, there is no place else to go. For the health and wellbeing of each member of the family, these repairs are essential.
We have found an excellent local contractor who has been a friend of the family through work programs he has created. Many of the items needed will be donated from his personal inventory. He plans on mentoring and paying a couple of the young adults in the household to assist with getting this job done.
He has provided a very thorough and fair itemized estimate (below). We would like to ask your help in crowdsourcing the money to cover the costs. We know times are tough, but each little bit will go such a long way in getting repairs done.
Tragically, one of the children passed away on Tuesday, January 12. Her name was Lisa and she was almost two years old. This has devastated the family. Any additional funds beyond the repairs will go toward arrangements for her burial and other essential needs that the family has during this time.
Thank you, thank you!
Sincerely,
Eléonore Hendricks - from New York, NY

Pine ridge is very dear to our hearts and we have known the family for many years.
Please see below budget breakdown and estimate of costs.
All funds raised will directly cover the cost of the below items and to the contractor and his assistants who will be paid for their labor. The contractor will be overseeing all the repairs for the family's home and we will continue to oversee the repairs schedule for this family. Any additional funds raised will be sent directly to the family.
