Suffering for Mark, Blood and a Decal
Who are we fundraising for during our quest for Damehood in Sufferlandria (10 hrs of Cycling videos April 4th)?
In March 2014, Mark Hall went to the doctor believing he had the flu. Within 3 hours Mark had gone from a quick visit to cure the flu at his physician’s office to a diagnosis of leukemia at the James Cancer Center. He learned his white blood cell count was so high it had made his blood sludge-like and so dangerous he should not have been alive. A day later his co...unt was lowered using a treatment similar to dialysis and his first week of chemo treatment began. His cancer went into remission and he was permitted to go home.
Over the next few months, Mark continued chemo treatments and prep for a bone marrow transplant only to learn as time passed that his heart was not strong enough for the transplant as planned. To add to his battle, despite testing several family members, a 50% match was the best that could be found. His heart ultimately strengthened and a decision was made to move forward with the bone marrow match. Unfortunately, Mark’s progress was halted again when it was decided to not move forward with the match.
In time, a better match was found on the other side of the world. On January 12, 2015, Mark’s miracle from Germany arrived…a 100% bone marrow match! I am happy to say that his transplant was a success!!! However, despite that success, Mark still has a long road to recovery and suffers from complications that arise. This is, of course, an extremely abridged version of Mark Hall’s battle. As you can imagine, Mark and his family struggle from loss of income as well as medical and travel expenses. We are looking forward to using our quest for Damehood to raise funds to help lessen the financial burden Mark, his wife Tina and his children Lexi and Wyatt face.
It will be both an honor and a privilege to ride for them.
