Attending the NABJ Convention 2015

"Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment" - Oprah Winfrey. My name is Reyna Harvey-Bell and I am a recent graduate of the University of California, Riverside . I have always loved story telling and hearing stories told by others. It brings me joy keeping those around me informed and experiencing new things. I want to attend the National Association of Black Journalist Convention 2015 in Minneapolis. The convention would be a great opportunity for me to learn from professionals in my desired career field. In addition to building strong professional life long lasting relationships. A little history on my journey so far: I started interning my freshman year for a local non-profit television program called, Wee Poets, it gives local school children and community organizations the opportunity to share their poetry with the world and reinforces reading and writing in urban inner cities. Sophomore year I started interning for , The Tavis Smiley Show and I would wake up around 4 a.m. catch the bus to the metro link to Hollywood to intern before I had a vehicle. I saved money working long hours on campus and fixed my mom's 98 mustang. I started driving out to LA to continue my internship. After this internship I started volunteering at the local radio station on campus and helped them create and edit their daily news program while I landed my third internship for National Public Radio syndication in, Los Angeles. I joined African Americans in Humanities on UCR's Campus and became their publicity, outreach coordinator and after this I applied for an internship in the Mayor's Office in Riverside where I started over the summer 2013 planning a city wide event called the Long Night of Arts and Innovation. I loved being involved on campus, in the community and giving back. Every time the career center invited me to speak for their career panel I would agree. I have talked to students just about every year about steps they can take to get the most out of college. I performed twice the annual Vagina Monologues and raised money for domestic violence against women. I guess you can say college was extremely busy but I have always enjoyed the professional journey. The next venture was joining an outside organization as a college liaison called, The Circle for Change Leadership Conference where we work to link professionals with minority college students. I volunteered my time and worked to rally a group of students to go down to Nevada for the 2012 presidential re-elections. This was all very rewarding. I loved production and learning so much so locally I spent some time volunteering for my churches media team. During my final two years at UCR I interned for KTLA Channel 5 News, The Arsenio Hall Show and The Oprah Winfrey Network. After graduation I was offered a position to work for CBS , The Oprah Winfrey Network and finally where I am currently, ABC7 Eyewitness News. I drive out their every week from Riverside because it is far to experience to relocate and live on my own . A friend introduced me to this web site. I thought I would tell my story and if anyone found it at least a tad bit intriguing and wanted to help I would appreciate anything at all! Thank you again for listening to my lengthy story and you may contact me via Facebook for any questions you may have. Thank you in advance!
