Nyumbani - Housing

Cedric and Justine are originally from the Congo, but fled violence and lived in Uganda for five years where they had their first two children.  After being kidnapped, Cedric escaped and for the family's safety, they were resettled to the Boston area on September 19, 2016. They were initially moved into a two bedroom apartment that they shared with three other Congolese men (the family had one bedroom, the three men the other). After then men left the Boston area, the family could no longer afford the apartment and Justine and the children moved into a shelter. Cedric rents rooms from different friends and has moved three times since March. Because the shelter is a women's shelter, the children rarely get to see their father and Justine is a single mother. On September 19, 2017, the one year anniversary of their arrival, the family welcomed their third child.

Cedric works two jobs and is studying in a program that will earn him an IT for Medical Profession certificate.  His program finishes in December 2018.

This campaign is aimed at helping to reunite this family in an apartment. We will pay their rent for 15 months. In the meantime, Cedric will continue to work and pay a monthly fee into a secure account that will be a savings account for when he finishes school. Upon completion of his school, he and Justine will have savings that will allow them to either move to a cheaper community, or allow them to take over paying their rent assuming his certificate will help him get a higher paying job. During this time both Cedric and Justine will get financial counselling to help them learn how to save money and budget their earnings to become self-sufficient.

They cannot do this without help. She has to take care of her three children, and Cedric only has so many waking hours. They are the SWEETEST family who deserves a break after being uprooted from their homeland and separated from their friends and family. They did not choose to come to Boston, an expensive city with no family. Cedric is working hard in school and wants to make a better life for his family. Justine wants to learn English and then study as well.

Can you help?

Giving them a home as well as a way for them to save their small earnings will be a long term investment in their futures.
