Trek to the Roof of Africa, Kilimanjaro (2012)-Gulf for Good
I write to you as a participant of Gulf For Good's "˜Trek to the Roof of Africa, Kilimanjaro 2012' challenge. From the 19th to the 29th of July I will trek through dramatically contrasting terrains on my way to the summit of Africa, Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Needless to say, this is an extremely challenging climb that requires great personal motivation and dedication to a rigorous training program three-months prior to the expedition. Climbing at high altitude is both physically demanding and unpredictable: even the fittest of individuals are sometimes brought down in agony by altitude sickness. However, I have great confidence that I will successfully reach the peak, albeit exhausted and literally out of breathe!
Sacrificing the daily comforts of everyday life, e.g. a warm bed, a hot shower and tasty food, the Gulf for Good team will endure cold nights on the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro, with only the basic essentials to survive. This, I believe, is very much representative of the conditions many of the children at Amani Children's Home have had to endure throughout their lives. It might thus be ironically comforting on the cold floor of Kibo Hut, as I toss and turn restlessly and anxiously the night before the final ascent to the summit, to know that my fundraising efforts, as well as my physical exertion during the hike, are all for a very good cause.
For the past eleven years Amani Children's Home has provided a refuge for Tanzania's street children. From its humble beginnings in 2001 when it opened its doors to six children, it now supports almost three hundred street children annually, providing primary education, counseling and caregiving, HIV/AIDS awareness programs and sports facilities. However, their main aim is to reunite lost children with their families. As a member of the Gulf for Good's team I will be fortunate enough to visit this centre in Moshi, Tanzania, prior to commencing the trek.
My goal is to raise US$5200 (AED 19,000), two-thirds of which will go directly to Amani Children's Home; the other third will cover my travel expenses, including flights and the trek up Kilimanjaro. Nothing of the before-mentioned amount will go to the Gulf for Good organisation. If you would like to see me succeed in this challenge, while at the same time contributing to the welfare and education of Tanzania's street children, please help me reach my goal.
