Tour: A Typewriter Project

Spende geschützt
The goal of Not Your Habibti Tour is creating community, that transcends  race, religion, and borders. Instead of focusing on our differences, Not Your Habibti allows young people to find common ground, by creating a space to share,  be heard and see the universality of our experiences. The tour aims to provide spaces for people to reflect on their own present and past experiences with gender and sexual harassment. The tour highlights how these painful experiences have or continue to affect everybody globally  in different, yet similar ways. Through this shared opportunity to hear others’ stories and share personal stories, many unload carried pain for the first time, find support and a sense of community, and ultimately allow all involved to see each other as fellow humans. We need this today more than ever, as the divisiveness plaguing our world permeates every level of life, the pervasiveness of sexual assault and harassment are sadly all too common on college campuses and  our social media driven generation, tends to isolate rather than meaningfully connect. The tour brings us together. For the many campus community members who attend Yasmeen Mjalli's talks and participate in A Typewriter Project, they leave feeling supported and heard.

The Tour
-     Who is the touring lecturer and artist? Yasmeen Mjalli is a 22 year old Palestinian-American, social entrepreneur  and artist who founded BabyFist, a clothing company. The goal of BabyFist is to counter street harassment through slogans written on clothing and it employs Middle Eastern women to support their financial independence. The clothing is purchased globally on her online platform.
-     What is the tour? The tour on each campus includes a lecture where Yasmeen shares her experiences as a businesswoman and  performance artist . Additionally, she performs A Typewriter Project where she sits in front of a typewriter and invites all people to share their stories with gender and sexual harassment. While the person sharing opens up, Yasmeen listens and records their narratives. The products are typewritten personal narratives that contribute to the tour’s goal to connect participants together through multiple layers of in person conversations,  the subsequent global body of work and those who engage with the pieces afterwards.
-     What does the tour’s name mean? “Not Your Habibti” means “Not Your Baby.” Yasmeen took a word that is sometimes used as a cat call, habibti, and transformed it into a statement for women’s empowerment. By using the slogan, we are reclaiming ourselves and reinforcing the notion that we are not owned by anyone else.
-     Has this tour been run before? Last year Yasmeen visited  Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Boston College, Brown University, Tulane University, Emory University and University of North Carolina Greensboro.
-     Tour stops this year:  University of Southern California, Stanford University, University of Chicago, Washington University of St. Louis, Middlebury College, New York University and Duke University.
