Brazil Against Crime was created by Brazilian citizens who have dedicated most of the last decade to a crusade to raise awareness of the rising tide of crime in Brazil. We are concerned citizens, parents, political activists, community organizers, lecturers and businessmen.
We believe the best weapons against violent crime are information and civil mobilization.
Brazil has over 60,000 murders every year, 92% of which go unsolved. Officially registered armed robberies reach 2 million a year - three every minute - and the prosecution rate is less than 2%. Most Brazilians have been mugged. Penal law has been changed in the last two decades to give criminals ever more rights. Even the worst, most depraved offenders spend no more than a few years in jail.
In Brazil, an entire ecosystem of non-profit organizations actively promote an "unjailing" agenda, advocating lighter sentences and even the outright release of all the criminals currently in jail. We oppose this ideologically charged and intellectually fraudulent approach to crime fighting and has helped found or support organizations to promote evidence-based, solid best-practices to policing and public security in general.
We work to disseminate information on crime and justice to regular Brazilian citizens, in a way they can understand. We have helped create a nationwide alliance between community leaders, law enforcement, prosecutors and regular citizens to devise innovative and efficient ways to fight back crime.
