NO COVID EVICTIONS PROTECT THE #EASTYORK50
MEET THE EAST YORK 50.
The 50+ immigrant and working class households in East York that may lose their homes this month. 50+ tenants being dragged to the LTB after trying to negotiate a fair COVID repayment plan through their tenants union. The #eastyork50 tenants being punished for organizing, and for prioritizing the safety of their community.
Since April, they have tried to negotiate with their landlords, Pinedale Properties, Ranee Management and Princess Management. These multi-million dollar corporations refused to listen or negotiate. Now, they are dragging tenants to court to try and evict them while COVID-19 rates are at a record high, and amid a new lockdown.
The LTB is now openly functioning as an evictions factory. They have increased the capacity to hear hundreds of evictions a day in online hearings. Most of these hearings last about five minutes because tenants don’t know they need to attend or are unprepared for what to expect. Tenants throughout the city have said that they will not stand for any one of their neighbours losing their homes during a pandemic.
In East York, tenant unions have come together to defend neighbours at risk of eviction. In Goodwood, we confronted sheriffs and over a dozen police officers to defend a 63 year old woman who was being evicted. In Crescent Town, we reversed an illegal eviction and returned a young, immigrant woman to her apartment.
Now, we do this for the East York 50.
We do not take funding from government, corporations or any group that would interfere with our interests. So over the past few months our members have been funding our events, printing/postering, mutual aid largely from our own pockets.
As our class suffers and our work grows, our organization is finding it harder to financially support the work we do by ourselves.
