Tribute to Rabbi Allen Krause

Today is the third anniversary of my father's passing. The loss has left a great hole in my life, as well as the lives of family and friends. We all miss him deeply.
Since his death, many of you have asked how you can honor Rabbi Allen Krause, and his impact on your life. My dad loved Jewish summer camp: he worked at Camp Swig in Saratoga, California as a young adult, and was on faculty at Swig every summer for over 30 years. He knew that kids who engage in their Jewishness at summer camp are much more likely to be involved in the Jewish community as adults. Over his years as a rabbi, my dad helped to send thousands of kids to Camp Swig and its sister camp, Camp Newman , in Santa Rosa, California. Camp was life; the rest was just details.
With Camp Newman’s help, we have reached agreement on a fitting tribute to my dad. One of the iconic locations at Camp Swig was the redwood grove outside of the cafeteria (see the photo, above). A small circle of trees well over 150 feet tall, the redwood grove created a natural, secluded spot for kids and staff alike to relax, meditate, or just schmooze. We are going to plant a similar redwood grove at Camp Newman, and name it for my dad. “Rabbi Allen’s Grove” will be a place where future generations of Jews can meet, mingle, pray, sing, or just rest during the long summer days. It will be located right next to the creek, and we know it will be a beautiful way to celebrate my dad’s life and legacy.
In order to have the grove planted in time for the beginning of the summer, we need to raise $13,000 by Friday, March 20th. This money will go directly to the purchasing and planting of the redwood trees, and landscaping the creekside location.
I welcome your participation in this effort. I will acknowledge every donation with a personal thank you, and send the donations to Camp Newman for processing.
