Night fell when we heard her prognosis - months, not years; terminal cancer. And at that moment, dawn became a dream on a postcard she would never see. But after the tears and the hurt and the anguish and the why, we came upon something bigger than death - life, while we have it. So we made a new Dawn. And we decided to approach our fate singing the hell out of life. All of us here, but mostly, Nydia. Only, to do that, we desperately need your help.
Nydia has aggressive stage 4 endometrial (gynecological) cancer. She was lucky enough to have insurance that covered treatment by a team at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, but even they couldn't undo the fact that the cancer had already spread from her uterus to her lymph nodes, kidneys, certain parts of her spine and collar bone. And after the 6-month fight we had hoped would reverse it, just one week ago she found out that it had spread to her brain "“ something that almost never happens with her type of cancer. 3 days ago we found out it was terminal.
She and her only daughter Christina are now faced with coming up with money they don't have to pay for home hospice care, an investment in Nydia's quality of life and Christina's precious time with her that we simply refuse to deny. Since her insurance only covers limited care, we'd like to be able to raise the money for the adequate care Nydia needs. We set our goal at $2,500 according to the cost of a home health aide for about 135 hours, or about 27 5-hour visits (probably 3 times a week over 9 weeks or 3 months). For a little while we'll be able to manage her care on our own. But not for long. With your help, it's our hope that maybe we can.
By contributing just as much as you can, Nydia will get careful attention to her needs and comfort maintenance, from being bathed to fed to simply sung to by the 6 buzzing Nightingales around her - and you, of course.
My aunt Nydia doesn't know we're doing this. But if we come up with our goal money we'll surprise her with the news of our campaign, and I just know she'd burst out in tears of sheer gratitude and disbelief for the kindness of your humanity. We'll even send you a picture of her getting care, signed by one of us (she can't use her hands very well, anymore). So please, send us whatever you can: we accept good vibes, thoughts, prayers, donations and MOST IMPORTANTLY social network sharing of the cause (via your own FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc.)! We'll be so grateful you did. Thank you forever for being Nydia's Nightingale.
