Newlife International School of Midwifery

Hi, I'm Anna Sackett! I wanted to share a little bit of my story with you in hopes that you will be encouraged in your walk with the Lord and have a growing desire to serve Him, whether through supporting me in prayer for His love to be spread, or donation to the ministry I will be studying and serving in. It is long, but I hope you will get a sense for the urgency and desire I have to grow and be a servant to those who need the love of Jesus.
I’m so excited to share that I’ve been accepted into Newlife International, a 2 ½ year missions and study program based in Davao, Philippines. It is run from a clinic in an impoverished area, providing healthcare for the local women and families. Visit my blog here where I am journaling the ongoing story behind my journey.
WHY DO I NEED YOUR SUPPORT?
On the surface, this fundraiser is for my tuition at Newlife International School of Midwifery. I will be training to become a licensed midwife! Midwives are educated in providing healthcare for women before, during and after their pregnancy and childbirth.
"The midwife is recognised as a responsible and accountable professional who works in partnership with women to give the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, to conduct births on the midwife’s own responsibility and to provide care for the newborn and the infant. This care includes preventative measures, the promotion of normal birth, the detection of complications in mother and child, the accessing of medical care or other appropriate assistance and the carrying out of emergency measures." ~International Confederation of Midwives
It makes me so excited to think about being able to provide a woman with information about her body so that she feels safe and cared for, and equipped to give her child a safe entrance into the world, ultimately keeping families together by saving the lives of children and their mommas throughout the world. In addition to this, being involved in this season of a family’s life gives us the unique opportunity to share the truth of the Gospel with them along the way. I could be just just one small part in this picture - it starts with medical education and experience in midwifery care.
“The beauty of midwifery within the context of cross-cultural Christian missions is simply this; there are no cultural, religious or political barriers to expressing the compassion and mercy of Jesus Christ demonstrated through the hands of a Christian midwife. This reality is enhanced by the simple fact that it extends out to the family of the midwife's patient and subsequently grants access of her Christian witness into the patient's home.”
But there’s more to the story than just one woman becoming a midwife.
100% OF THE MONEY RAISED WILL BE INVESTED INTO SERVING FAMILIES IN NEED.
The thing that captured my heart about Mercy Maternity Clinic is that, while I will be working toward a degree, all of the funding goes toward the ministry itself, which is self supported by students’ tuition. And on top of that, Mercy Maternity Clinic is free for local families to receive healthcare, which they desperately need because of their severely impoverished living conditions. How amazing is it that God has provided a way for His people to feel His love and presence through this program and clinic?
This video is such an informative and encouraging look into the opportunity midwives have to, quite literally, change lives.
While I am there receiving education and training in midwifery, I will have the chance to pour into the lives of Filipinos on a daily basis, loving on them as children of God. My prayer is for the Lord to use me to bring the gospel to people who may never have had the chance to hear it, as I learn how to care for women during their pregnancy and labor, and so show them the servant's heart that Jesus had when He walked on the earth. The maternity center is where my clinical studies will take place daily alongside other students, as we care for the mothers before, during and after their pregnancies. The Midwives on staff provide academic instruction. This will give me a chance to receive an Associates in Midwifery, as well as a credential to then have the chance to serve families wherever the Lord leads me afterward.
Please visit the website of the program - there is so much more information on the necessity of skilled midwives in developing countries. I would love your support as I prepare to receive an education in Midwifery and cross cultural training.
WHAT ARE MY PLANS?
Lord willing, I will be departing this September, 2019 to travel to the Philippines and start my education and service in a new culture and community. The program is 2.5 years long and will include language study, community development and rural outreaches, and cross cultural training in interacting with patients.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
First and foremost, I will need prayer for endurance, courage and joy, both now and throughout my time there. I hope to keep prayer partners updated through my blog, annacherie.net . Please consider using the subscribe feature to receive updates and prayer requests as I post them! I would love if you would come alongside me in my prayer for the Filipino women and families as well, as I get ready to meet them & move to their community to serve them! Would you pray that their hearts would be softened and that scripture would be shared with them so they are able to hear of the gift of Salvation we’ve been given?
“Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all. [...] Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
2 Corinthians 3:2-5,17-18
That being said, there are also financial needs that need to be met in order to keep the clinic running and provide care for these people.
GIVING:
Each semester, I will need to pay for a portion of my tuition, $5,300, totaling $25,160*.
Airfare will be approximately $700.
Immigration and Visas will be around $500.
Course books will total $600.
Midwifery supplies such as a doppler, scrubs, etc will be about $500.
(In addition, I will be paying $9000 toward dual-enrollment in NCM, so that when my service and study with Newlife are complete, I will have an Associates of Science in Midwifery, and will be qualified to sit for the US Midwifery certification exam.)
My total investment will be $36,535.
*This amount will go entirely to support Newlife International.
I have been saving for quite some time, and although it is approaching fast and I am not near my goal, I trust that the Lord will provide through diligence and faith in His promises and desire for the Filipino people to be reached. I am asking for your help in reaching my funding goals, in whatever amount the Lord lays on your heart. My hope is that providing the full breakdown amount will help you envision specifically where your investment could go.
My prayer is that, as you participate in my story and in the story of God’s work in the lives of the Filipino families, you will be encouraged to be bold in your walk with Jesus and to make disciples where God has called you.
‘For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?" So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.’
