New Eyes for Vera

Donation protected

My darling sister Vera was the sweetest little baby girl I had ever known. She was so content, smiled often and seldom cried. But my mom noticed that as a baby, she seemed to have trouble focusing on things and following objects with her eyes. It seemed as though she couldn't really focus in on our faces as she was being held. As a very young toddler she often bumped into things and we realized that the cross eyes that babies often have had not cleared up in Vera at all. In fact, they seemed worse. My sister was diagnosed with a severe stigmatism in both eyes and her vision was so impaired that she was deemed legally blind. I remember her wearing the thickest pink glasses I had ever seen. But boy did she look adorable and seemed very happy with her newfound ability to "see".  My sister went on to have four surgeries in her childhood to help in correcting her crossed eyes.

Vera has since grown up, raised 6 beautiful children, works hard at whatever she puts her hand to AND.. she has the heart of an angel who would give the shirt off of her back to a stranger in need. Just ask anyone who has the privilege to be in her life. She still wears super thick glasses (although not as thick as they once were due to advancements in lens over the years), and when she goes to the eye doctor, that enormous "E" at the top of the eye chart is far too blurry for her to be able to make heads or tails of. In the morning upon waking she has to fish around to find her glasses even though they are usually right next to the bed, but sometimes she falls asleep with them on and the next morning the search to find them "somewhere" in the bed ensues because my dear sister cannot see a thing without them. She has to feel around and hope she happens upon.

Recently, Vera went in for one of her regular eye exams and her doctor told her about the possibility of a surgery that could remove her developing cataracts and at the same time, give her 20/20 vision and correct her stigmatism!!Wow!! We were thrilled and overjoyed at the possibility of her being able to see with perfect vision. It really feels like a miracle! Something she could only dream of.. but now, a real possibility.

Vera's insurance from her job will be able to pay for most of her surgery. She does however, need to come up with $2000 in order to have it done. As soon as she has it, we will be able to schedule her surgery. We are asking for $2500 to cover the $2000 and $500 to help cover the extra expenses of her needing aftercare and for the work days she will have to miss. Thank you all for listening to our story and for caring about it. I love my sister so much and she is so deserving of this possibility. Any help you might provide would be immensely appreciated and we are so grateful to each and every one of you.
