Medical Mission Trip to Nepal

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Alok Shrestha and I am a medical student at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine - GA Campus in Suwanee, GA. I am part of an International Medicine Club at my school and we are fundraising to organize and run a small clinic and to send a group of our medical students to Nepal. My family is originally from Nepal and I had the opportunity to go back last summer before starting medical school. Although Nepal is a beautiful country with a rich culture, it was shocking and saddening to me to see the lack of basic healthcare infrastructure in many parts of Nepal. Even hospitals and bigger facilities sometimes lack basic supplies like soap in the bathroom for hand washing or run out of disinfectants, bandages, and gloves which greatly diminishes the quality of healthcare they can provide.
These basic necessities that are often taken for granted are essential to prevent many transmissible diseases like the flu virus, salmonella and shigella, and many diarrheal illness, which are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Nepal. The situations are much more desperate in smaller villages and communities outside of the cities where the only source of medical care for the entire community is a health post, a small medical center that often times lack basic supplies and is run by a nurse or local volunteer workers.
The students and the medical team will be serving at a local health post in Jhor Mahankal, a village of approximately three thousand people, 13 km from Kathmandu. The students will assist the doctors in providing free primary care services such as administering vaccinations, taking history and physical, assisting with other minor clinical procedures and promoting basic public health education like clean hygiene, hand washing, and waste disposal.
The donated funds will be used to cover the cost of running the health post facility, managing the medical team for 2 weeks, and collecting and transporting medical supplies. Although many of the medical students are paying out of pocket to take on this project, some of funds may be used for student expenses, like meals, housing and other accommodations.
I know this is a large amount of money we are trying to raise and although our volunteer work in there may only be for a limited time, we hope our contribution in promoting public health and in raising awareness for the dire need of financial aid and resources in these parts of Nepal will have a lasting impact. If you can donate even a small amount of money, it would greatly help us give back to the community what we are learning in school.
Thank you,
Alok Shrestha
