Nelson & Adriano's New House

*** Latest Update - July 21st 2020 ***

To Nelson and Adriano's generous supporters,

As you know it has been some time since our last announcement in May 2019. From our last update and up until February 2020 we completed the rendering for the entire house and installed all window frames. The photos included in this update were taken from February 2020 after plastering the house.

After finishing the above, we were faced with a difficult decision to stop construction on the house and reallocate those funds so Nelson and Adriano may continue to buy food for their families during the public health and economic shutdown due to the coronavirus.

Upon the announcement of the shutdown in Mozambique made in March 2020 and with World Health Organizations advising travelers everywhere to stay home, the tourism industry in Vilanculos, Mozambique has come to a standstill. Nelson and Adriano’s livelihoods are dependent upon tourism and have unfortunately been unable to earn a living for the last 5 months. Our budget to complete the house was inclusive that Nelson and Adriano would be able to work as well to support their families during this time. While we have not been able to complete the house as scheduled, we are incredibly proud to have supported two great men like Nelson and Adriano and their families throughout this unimaginable time.

Despite this unforeseen setback, we fully intend on seeing this project through completion. To fully complete the house, we are just $2000 USD away! It is amazing to see how far we have come since this project’s inception in June 2018.

Let’s finish strong and get these gents the house they deserve! If you are unable to donate please share!

Warm regards.

Ty

*** Update - May 28th 2019 ***

We are 11 months in on this project and the end is in sight. To finish Adriano’s home, we only need to purchase 7 doors and 11 windows before it is fully complete. For Nelson’s home we have purchased the building materials but have yet to start on construction. I estimate both projects will be complete by February 2020.

Mozambique ranks third in Africa for vulnerability to climate change and since this initiative was started two major hurricanes have struck the region; therefore, it is essential that the homes we are building are capable of surviving hurricane force winds. Building homes to this standard does come at higher price tag but will be worth the investment if/when another natural disaster strikes.

A massive thank you to all who have supported this project over the last 11 months. Your donations are not only helping Nelson & Adriano build their dream homes but are also helping the local economy of Mozambique by employing a team of indigenous builders to complete the construction of these projects.

***Nelson and Adriano - Their  stories***

Hey everyone,

I hope many of you had the opportunity to meet these two amazing gents while exploring the gorgeous beaches of Mozambique, but in case you didn't, here's your chance to help two truly amazing people!

The goal of this fundraiser is to raise $10,000 USD that will be split between Nelson and Adriano to allow them to accomplish three objectives: 1) it will fund the expenses of construction materials to allow each of these men to build a new home for their loved ones in Mozambique 2) it will give these men a stable, reliable income to purchase food and other day-to-day necessities, and 3) it will provide these gentlemen with some starter money to help launch their independent business aspirations. Lets make their dreams a reality!

Both of these men have had incredibly difficult lives, read their stories below to find out more:

Adriano (pictured right) lived on the streets of Mozambique as an orphan for over 16 years. To take care of his siblings, Adriano would work under a local painter where he forgone receiving any pay in exchange for learning how to paint. Many nights Adriano selflessly went without food so his siblings wouldn't go hungry. Once Adriano refined his skills, he managed to start his own business selling these paintings and other crafts. Today, Adriano can be found selling his amazing artwork on the beaches of Vilanculos.

Adriano currently resides in a small shack made of straw-like material with his sister and two young nieces. Since he was a child, Adriano’s dream has always been to one day be the proud owner of a strong home. The price to build a house to this standard is $7000 USD, and Adriano has saved his entire life to accomplish this dream. By combining his life savings with the money we raised so far, we have paid $4000 of the required $7000 USD to build this house. Once completed Adriano’s new home will consist of 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, a massive kitchen, a living room, a dining room, a walk-in pantry and 2 balconies! Check out the design plans and progress photos!

Nelson (pictured left) has a similar story. From an early age, Nelson could be found in the local markets of Vilanculos operating a used clothing business. During this time, Nelson honed his skills as a chef, perfecting both local and international dishes alike (anyone who has tried his chicken can attest to it's deliciousness!) Now a family man, Nelson is looking to settle-down and provide a permanent home for his loved ones in Mozambique.

***March 3rd 2019 Update ***

We just finished laying the concrete for the roof of the home!

In all, it took 30 builders and 12 hours of straight work to finish the entire roof! It was imperative that the roof was completed all in one go as to ensure a leak-less roof. When finished, Adriano prepared a meal for ALL 30 workers and made sure every builder received a fair wage for their hard work.

Through this journey, so many people have come together to donate their money and shine light on this cause. I am proud to welcome another truly great person, Andrew Yost, to the team! Andrew has dedicated his birthday fundraiser to help Nelson and Adriano finish their home. If you can, please consider donating to support our brothers in Mozambique and celebrate Andrew's birthday on March 6th!

Please enjoy the progress photos!

***December 28th 2018 Update***

With our gingerbread contest done and dusted I would like to send a massive THANK YOU to the following: Katrina Di Raddo (our gingerbread contest organizer), Equitable Bank (our event sponsor) and finally a huge thank you to all our lovely participants! Together with the raffle baskets, we raised $752.15. With Equitable’s generous match, that will be $1,504.30 CAD going towards the construction and furnishing of Nelson and Adriano’s houses in Mozambique, Africa!

I would like to extend this heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who liked, shared, or donated to this fundraising campaign. A special shout out to Arjun Kohaal and the Ihaka family who have left me speechless with their generosity – I hope you enjoy those paintings by Adriano! We have raised an astounding total of $9,281 USD for Nelson and Adriano, a truly unbelievable achievement.

While this fundraiser is scheduled to end on January 1st, this page will remain active until we fully complete both projects, of course any donations made will still go directly to Nelson and Adriano. GoFundMe does take a small percentage of each donation, but 100% of the remaining donation will benefit Nelson and Adriano – NOT a third-party organization.

I look forward to providing you all with updates on our projects in the coming months!
