The advent of Covid-19 created a unique and unprecedented need in the bar and restaurant industry, given millions of hourly workers were suddenly out of work for an indefinite period of time. This includes food and beverage servers, cooks, suppliers, distillers, bartenders, support staff, farmers, ranchers, and more.
Having already laid the groundwork for a formidable emergency outreach initiative after Hurricane Harvey temporarily shut down large swaths of the Greater Houston region and beyond, Southern Smoke was uniquely positioned to hit the ground running when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the closure of restaurants and bars throughout the United States.
Southern Smoke received over 25,000 applications for emergency relief due to Covid-19 in the initial six weeks of the outbreak in the United States.
Southern Smoke is a crucial safety net helping families sleeping in cars acquire safe housing, ensuring patients have access to life-saving medications, helping hard-working people literally “keep the lights on” while out of work, and hiring dozens from the food and beverage industry to help this cause while their places of work are closed. Since the advent of Covid-19, as of early August 2020, Southern Smoke has distributed $3,000,000 to almost 1500 people in need. The organization still faces tens of thousands of applications from people in crisis.
Southern Smoke is uniquely equipped to expeditiously and prudently distribute funds to as many people as possible throughout the United States. To this organization's knowledge, it is the only entity of its kind doing what it does in the swift manner it does it. Southern Smoke is a 501(c)3 organization.
